From the Publisher
Publishers note Second Edition
Following the sell-out of the first edition, the 2003 reprint which eventually evolved itself into a fully revised Second Edition was crowbarred into existence by persistent demand and sky-high second-hand prices on the internet (£150 offered for what had been a £30 book). Users also said of the full colour, gold-blocked hardback Too nice to take on an expedition .. . We hope the new Field Manual format softback and monochrome is appropriately butch and now suits the book to being used as a load-spreader under the jack or a suitable spot to rest your mug of tea! It also brings price and mailing costs down. Some things dont change much and havent but the book has been revised throughout with major updates in the vital areas of communications, satellite-based navigation and emergencies. Also vehicles, modifications, fuel and oils, tyres and theres a good number of tweaks and giddyups elsewhere too.

My copy has been used to plan a trip to Morocco (by a friend) and he was full of praise for the hints and tips he got from this book, from getting a CARNET to dealing with those locals trying to sell you hash.
The book goes into deep detail on lots of topics from how to select appropriate clothing material, tents, camping gear and even into how to choose an oil for your engine from unknown brands. Even simple things like using a mirror to reflect sunlight into a spotlight to show hidden dips in almost featureless sand shows how much thought has been put into this book. I have both this one and the slightly updated 2.1 edition which has updates on gps equipment, websites and such.
As an off-road instructor I have told several people to get this book before they plan their trips. Just do it.
It has been written to update and further his first (now hard to find) volume of the same title; it also includes some information from his Royal Geographical Society pamphlet on Desert Expeditions. Much of the content of the former is reproduced however there are notable updates which make it very much worth buying.
Whether you are travelling to mountain, desert or jungle environments with your 4x4 this is required reading. It is extremely comprehensive and authoritative and written with an understated, eloquent style that is sadly lacking in many outdoor books today.
If you are contemplating an overland trip or the equipping of a vehicle for such, this is the only book you will need to buy.
My only slight quibble is that having prepared a few vehicles over the years, I've found better sources of information on the self build side of things.
Otherwise, a superb book and it must rank amongst the best of it's type
