About the Author

Jack Monroe was born in 1988 in Southend-on-Sea. Jack was awarded the 2013 Fortnum and Mason Judges' Choice Award for the impact that her blog, A Girl Called Jack, now named Cooking on a Bootstrap, has had. She is now a well-known campaigner against hunger and poverty in the UK, weekly recipe columnist for the Guardian, and winner of Women of the Year 2014. She is author of the cookbooks A Girl Called Jack, A Year in 120 Recipes, Cooking on a Bootstrap and Tin Can Cook.

I was looking forward to this book as I m trying to reduce the amount of meat and dairy I m consuming. However, after reading through it, I m not particularly impressed. There is a whole section on sandwiches and many of the soup recipes are basically recipes that have featured in her other books, just tweaked very slightly to make vegan, by which I mean for many recipes, she has just switched the meat/dairy with beans or lentils, not very imaginative. It’s definitely not a budget book either, featuring ingredients like saffron, no less. In my opinion it’s not worth buying, Miguel Barclay s £1 vegan cook books are a lot more impressive. This book feels like it’s been written quickly to make money off the current vegan food trend.

An entire chapter on sandwiches?! Amazing! As a vegetarian I find that a lot of sandwiches rely heavily on cheese, this has given me so many ideas. I can’t wait to start trying them all!

Each new book Jack writes gets better than the one before.
As a vegetarian of about 35 years I’ve enjoyed using Jack’s recipes to vary my diet and for inspiration to try new things.
A favourite with my friends and family who are vegan, vegetarian and meat eaters is the Chick Pea and Peach Curry from A Girl Called Jack.
This time for me, the stand out recipe from Vegan (ish) is the Ultimate Moussaka in page 126.
I will be trying Jack Fruit too!

I think this could be Jacks best book to be honest and I have them all. I’m not vegan or vegetarian and I am not ready to give up meat completely, although I’m a huge animal lover and it does cross my mind a lot.

I do love my veggies though and I also work three jobs, one of which includes the night shift. So loved the soup and sandwiches sections as perfect for me on nights and needing a quick snack. Also really like the look of the fakeaways!

The big dinners section is great in saving me time too and batch cooking. Life is really about eating on the run at the moment from one job to the other (much like so many other folk) and a good many of these recipes suit that and also navigating not a lot of funds.

A few have commented on some of the ingredients being expensive, however Jack covers this at the start of the book and most of the expensive ingredients are optional anyway. My night shifts are at one of the largest UK supermarkets and jackfruit for example could be found recently on a huge offer of 70p per tin on sale. It’s typically around £1.20 per tin any other time. The cost of a lot of vegan products are starting to slowly come down, as this way of life becomes more mainstream and the products become more in demand. But as always people are always welcome to make a recipe their own and simply take inspiration from Jack, just add in what you can afford. It’s what I do.

I’m looking forward to working my way through this book. Well done Jack!

My book arrived yesterday,

I am so delighted with it. There is so much information on how to get started with a vegan diet - it covers everything you need to know and then some. Jack Monroe writes so well and, more to the point, she doesn't preach!

The recipes look so tempting - my other half is very keen for me to make the beetroot and lentil lasagne first off. Having said that, there are so many recipes in there, covering breakfasts, lunches and dinner. Anybody worrying about not having anything interesting to eat on a vegan diet will be reassured that this is not the case.

Our son's partner is vegan and our son is "nearly" vegan. I did suspect they have been relying on ready made products of late. This book will change things for the better. Am already thinking I'll have to get another copy for them, because I'm not parting with mine!

When I hear they have a new book coming out, I can't help buying it. That said, I've never been disappointed!

After a long, excited wait, this arrived as a late Christmas present to myself this morning. While I haven't had a chance to make any of the recipes yet, it's already inspired a few future dinners; some directly from recipes in her books and others simply by suggesting things my wife and I hadn't considered before. We tend to find that 1/3 of the book is similar to stuff we already do, 1/3 is stuff that doesn't suit what we're looking for and the other 1/3 is absolute gems which improve our own abilities in the kitchen. For someone new to budget cooking I'd say it'd be closer to 80% gems and 20% "Other people will love this but it's not for me".

I also love the unpretentious nature of the book.

I've already preordered the next book, and eagerly await it!
