    I really wanted to like this machine, it's a Vax and it's incredibly well made. If anything will survive the next Blitz, it's likely to be this, as another reviewer has pointed out, it's built like a tank (and is as heavy as one too!).

    On the plus side:

    It's solidly constructed, has incredible suction power (the suction made it feel almost twice the weight on carpeting) and the beater bar really lifts the pile of the carpet.
    It also has a nice large bin to collect all the dust and dirt (and likely half your carpet fibres!) and nice rubberised wheels so won't cause any damage to wood floors, a good rubber bumper around the foot to protect furniture and skirting and a really long power cord.

    Also included are a very long flexible crevice tool, ideal for those awkward little gaps, a mini power brush for stairs or furniture, a 3-in-1 crevice/brush/furniture tool and an extra wide tool for furniture or curtains.

    The negatives list is far bigger:

    With the weight, it was extremely difficult to manoeuvre, especially on hard floors.

    The mini power brush has very soft bristles so didn't pick up much and no air vent so as soon as you put in on the stairs the suction virtually stopped.

    With the size of the machine I'd expect 3 proper tools, not a multi-tool. I kept pinching my fingers in the fitting when trying to swap the parts over and with the brush or fabric tool attached it became mare awkward to handle for precise cleaning.

    To use the tools, the hose has to be unclipped, but the tools just wedge in and can easily pull back out when cleaning.

    I recently reviewed a cylinder cleaner made by Vax and was really impressed with it, prior to that I had only used upright cleaners, so it was interesting to be able to review this model, and to compare it to the cylinder version and our old upright cleaner (another manufacturer's model, the one with the ball).

    Both Vax models are well engineered and are guaranteed for six years which shows the level of product confidence and really takes some beating, I also like the Vax "we love to help" attitude to customer care, they display their contact telephone numbers and encourage you to contact them if you unfortunately do have a problem rather than returning the cleaner to the supplier.

    This model has a generous length of lead and a good selection of tools, we have quite a long staircase and using the extension tube this one reaches to the very top of the stairs, in the past when I used the ball machine I always had to tackle the top section with the cleaner upstairs and then had to keep a wary eye out for it coming down to meet me halfway.

    The cleaner certainly does its job looking at the collection bin, I found it cleaned better than the cylinder version on carpets and also picked up a lot more compared to the ball, in fact you can actually see the difference looking at the carpet, I do think this is a great cleaner but I must confess to preferring the Vax cylinder version for the hard floor areas, this is simply because it's lighter to operate, and being lazy I quite like the cylinder's auto winding power lead.

    The only real downside I found with the cleaner is that some people may find it a little heavy to operate, its marketed as the world's most powerful multicyclonic upright cleaner and it is definitely a five star beast of a cleaner but unfortunately as it is heavy it will not suit everybody hence the four star rating.

    The Vax U89-MAF-2T is a high spec `upright' vacuum cleaner, with impressive suction and carpet cleaning power, coupled with bag-less dust collection. The powered beater lifts loose fluff and embedded dirt very effectively. But the small tools are less inspiring and most require separate storage. The lack of lead retraction/storage is inconvenient. Emptying the dust collector is awkward and messy.

    Tools
    * 1. Built-in floor sweeper/vacuum, a definite 5/5.
    The well-executed option for powering the beater makes a big difference to the pick-up of dirt. Excellent.
    * 2. "Turbotool" Hand-held sweeper/vacuum 1/5.
    Effectively useless despite massive suction; it barely touched the dust on my stairs; also it is awkward to use because of the fixed angle. It tends to stall and clog on anything more than a few millimetres in diameter - eg polystyrene beads. Very disappointing.
    * 3. "Three-in-one crevice upholstery dusting tool", 2/5.
    Nice idea but the clip holding the brush bits in place is released by the vacuum so the brush bit slides away from the surface to be cleaned. Forget trying to use the brush bits.
    * 4. "Upholstery tool". 3/5.
    Having tried it out I can't think when we might use it again. It does what it claims, after a fashion, albeit somewhat awkwardly because of the fixed angle.
    * 5. "Flexi crevice tool". 2/5.
    Good for reaching down the back of the washing machine or tumble dryer, or behind the chairs if you don't want to move them. But, it is just too narrow and clogs much too easily, and the massive suction contracts and distorts the hose so strongly the system becomes almost unusable.
    * 6. Long hose. 3/5.
