The vacuum cleaner is powerful, relatively lightweight and easy to empty. It gets the job done. However, it feels plasticky, clunky and the head is bulky, meaning it sometimes won't fit into tight spaces or under furniture. It's also noisy, the cable could be longer, and using the hose is a bit of faff.
I do tend to like Vax products, though this one is only okay. If you can stretch to it I would go for the more expensive Vax Air Reach, which is more compact, less clunky-feeling, and has a longer cable. You also don't have to fit an adapter over the brush bar to use it on hard floors.
Unfortunately there are a few minus points, though. For starters, attaching the hose is a fiddly process that involves first unclipping the small hose on the base then removing the long hose from the handle and connecting it to the small hose with a bayonet fitting.
Even worse, if you want to vacuum hard floors, you have to turn the machine on its side and fit a metal grille to the base. There is nowhere to store the grille on the machine itself, so the chances of losing it (in my house anyway) are high.
The description of this vacuum cleaner as lightweight needs to be taken with a large pinch of salt. I actually found it quite heavy. Pushing it around my living room, which has a deep pile carpet, required a surprising amount of effort. Neither would I want to be carrying it up and down the stairs on a regular basis.
Another small criticism is that the power lead is on the short side. Another yard would have made a big difference.
I am grateful to Amazon for letting me review this product, but I have to say I much prefer my Zanussi ZAN2000A AirSpeed Lite Multi-Cylconic Bagless Vacuum Cleaner, also purchased from Amazon. Although it has its quirks, it is far lighter and doesn't require you to all but reassemble it when you want to change surfaces.
I definitely would not recommend this vacuum cleaner for an elderly person or anyone who has mobility difficulties.
The unit is fairly lightweight for a powerful cyclone cleaner. This is both a blessing and curse as it actually makes it more difficult to use with full suction. After using a heavier Dyson model for years, it is actually easier to create a good back-and-forth rhythm, using the weight of the unit to create momentum. This one tends to feel stuck to the carpet as it is so much lighter. And on lino (even with the hard floor attachment on) I could barely move it. You can lessen the suction by opening the airhole on the handle, and increase it again if required, though.
It is fairly basic (you have to disconnect the main hose and attach the hose on the handle to use the attachments). And it feels to be of "good" rather than "premium" build quality.
For the money, it's a good buy, though, and you'll be getting a very efficient vaccuum for a fraction of the price of most others this powerful. It does take a little armwork (especially on full suction), but the amount of dust it picks up is very impressive and as good as the Dyson which cost 3 times as much.
- Cleans well
- Good value for money
- Easy to empty
- Very lightweight compared to other uprights I've used
- Reasonably quiet
- Limited set of tools (e.g. nothing particularly useful for stairs)
- Converting between hardfloor and carpet is fiddly
- Lead could do with being longer
This is a good value vacuum cleaner from Vax that performs well. I gave it a run over on carpet that had already been cleaned with our cylinder vacuum (which has great suction) and was surprised to see that the Vax picked up even more. I think the main difference between the two is that being an upright the vax has a rotating brush. Our cylinder cleaner relies on pure suction to get the dirt up, and in this case the Vax with its rotating brush did the better job.
The cleaner is lightweight compared to conventional uprights and reasonably quiet. If you want to convert between carpet and floor mode you have to clip on an adaptor to the bottom by tipping the machine upright. At first I tried to get away without using this but the adaptor makes a real difference to the pick--up on a hard floor, so you really need to use it. The adaptor doesn't seem to attach for storage anywhere on the cleaner itself which makes the whole conversion process fiddly - you have to stop, get the adaptor, fit it, run over the hard floor and then take it off again, storing the adaptor somewhere afterwards. Other vacuum's do a much better job by allowing you to switch modes more easily, using with a press of a button on the cleaner itself.
The Vax is quite bulky so not so good on stairs. You can convert it for use with tools by unplugging the connecting hose that comes from the motor and plugging this into another hose which then connects to the cleaning tool. Not in itself too complicated, but more fiddy than a typical cylinder cleaner. But many uprights have the same issue. I also found the lead to be a little on the short side, which if you're going up the stairs and beyond can be a limitation. I measured it as just short of 6M. A cylinder cleaner of course has extra extension through the hose.
Anyway, back to the stairs - the supplied 2-in-1 tool did a good job but the brush is really too small to be able to quickly / easily do the stairs, and that's one of the main limitations of this cleaner for me. However you can buy additional tools to overcome this, but you need to take care which ones you buy. The TurboTool (which comes with the Power Pet/Reach, the next mode up) looks ideal, but the only one I could see on Amazon is a "Type 1" tool and the instructions say you need a "Type 5". Reading the reviews of the Type 1 tool it's clear that some people have ordered it and found that it doesn't fit their Vax, so care is needed when you order, but the part numbers are all laid out in the instructions.
Emptying is easy - just press a button on top, lift out the dust chamber and press another button at the bottom to empty into your bin.
To summarise this is a good value upright that cleans well but has some limitations. I've given it 4 stars rather than 3 because it's good value, and I think that old adage "you get what you pay for" applies here.
