Unfortunately there are a few minus points, though. For starters, attaching the hose is a fiddly process that involves first unclipping the small hose on the base then removing the long hose from the handle and connecting it to the small hose with a bayonet fitting.
Even worse, if you want to vacuum hard floors, you have to turn the machine on its side and fit a metal grille to the base. There is nowhere to store the grille on the machine itself, so the chances of losing it (in my house anyway) are high.
The description of this vacuum cleaner as lightweight needs to be taken with a large pinch of salt. I actually found it quite heavy. Pushing it around my living room, which has a deep pile carpet, required a surprising amount of effort. Neither would I want to be carrying it up and down the stairs on a regular basis.
Another small criticism is that the power lead is on the short side. Another yard would have made a big difference.
I am grateful to Amazon for letting me review this product, but I have to say I much prefer my Zanussi ZAN2000A AirSpeed Lite Multi-Cylconic Bagless Vacuum Cleaner, also purchased from Amazon. Although it has its quirks, it is far lighter and doesn't require you to all but reassemble it when you want to change surfaces.
I definitely would not recommend this vacuum cleaner for an elderly person or anyone who has mobility difficulties.
- Cleans well
- Good value for money
- Easy to empty
- Very lightweight compared to other uprights I've used
- Reasonably quiet
- Limited set of tools (e.g. nothing particularly useful for stairs)
- Converting between hardfloor and carpet is fiddly
- Lead could do with being longer
This is a good value vacuum cleaner from Vax that performs well. I gave it a run over on carpet that had already been cleaned with our cylinder vacuum (which has great suction) and was surprised to see that the Vax picked up even more. I think the main difference between the two is that being an upright the vax has a rotating brush. Our cylinder cleaner relies on pure suction to get the dirt up, and in this case the Vax with its rotating brush did the better job.
The cleaner is lightweight compared to conventional uprights and reasonably quiet. If you want to convert between carpet and floor mode you have to clip on an adaptor to the bottom by tipping the machine upright. At first I tried to get away without using this but the adaptor makes a real difference to the pick--up on a hard floor, so you really need to use it. The adaptor doesn't seem to attach for storage anywhere on the cleaner itself which makes the whole conversion process fiddly - you have to stop, get the adaptor, fit it, run over the hard floor and then take it off again, storing the adaptor somewhere afterwards. Other vacuum's do a much better job by allowing you to switch modes more easily, using with a press of a button on the cleaner itself.
The Vax is quite bulky so not so good on stairs.Read more ›
Mostly, yes. It's easy to assemble, feels pretty solidly built, it removes a satisfying amount of dirt and dust from the carpet, and the bin is of decent capacity and easy to empty. So as an actual upright cleaner, it's pretty good. One of my biggest complaints with the older model was that the hose was far too short to be of any real use with the attachments; on the new one, there is an extension hose which clips onto the handle to provide a sensible length. However, this does bring up one of the biggest drawbacks compared to a Dyson - this is very fiddly to use. On a Dyson, you pull the handle upwards, and the hose is already attached and ready to use. On the Vax, you pull the handle upwards to remove it - but you then have to detach the hose from the base of the cleaner and connect it to the extension hose with a bayonet fitting; this involves bending right down to the floor.
Similarly, to use the cleaner on hard floors, rather than a simple switch, you need to turn the cleaner over and attach an additional hard floor bracket to the base - again, unnecessarily fiddly.
The hard floor attachment is supplied, along with a 2 in 1 crevice tool / brush, and an adaptor to enable the brush to be attached to the hose without needing to connect the handle, to make it easier to use when cleaning in small spaces.Read more ›
