First off, it is a steam only model rather than having a detergent tank. I've not been over fussed about the detergent tank to be honest, the Vax detergent is very expensive, and I thought the whole point of having a steam cleaner was that they don't need detergents. But once I've used one with the tank, it seems like going backwards somehow not to have the choice. Human nature.
The floor head works inthe usual "attach a pad" way with a spiky plastic underside which grips the fluffy back of the pad. I plugged the machine in and it was ready to steam in a minute or two, so I started on the kitchen floor. Strangely, this one starts up as soon as it gets to heat, there's no trigger or switch, so it stays steamin all the time. The Steam fresh Combi and S7 which I have also used have a handle trigger to control steam.
However, after a short while I didnt miss the trigger as the machine leaves the floor pretty dry even with always on steam. I had a quick go with the carpet slider which is described as "refreshing" pile carpets; I would say this is exactly what it does, lifts and fluffs the pile a bit and generally brightens it, but you'd need a proper carpet washer to actually clean.
Converting to a hand held steamer wasnt as easy as it could be; if you lack strenth in your hands don't choose this model as getting the floor head off is a wrangle. You then have to attach the attachment and remove the handle, both are easy to do.Read more ›
So I was pleased to be offered the chance to review this one, new to the market, and, I hoped, an advance on my older, slightly primitive model. And I have to say I am impressed. This unit is light and moves across linoleum and tiled floors with ease. The reservoir is large enough, it claims, for fifteen minutes of use, and this was easily long enough to cover a decent-sized kitchen floor. There is still a limit to how good a clean you can achieve, using only steam, and I did find one or two areas which required a little closer attention after the first clean, but it certainly made a back-breaking task much less painful.
The one area where this unit really shines is that it has the option to detach the steam generator and use it as a hand-held steam "blaster" for more stubborn stains, and to get into more inaccessible places. It took quite a lot of trial and error to get the knack of using it as a hand-held unit, but the results were very impressive. The difference in results between a direct jet of steam (via hand-held) and the steam filtering through the cleaning cloth (via upright) is huge, although using the direct jet will make the target area considerably wetter, necessitating a quick mop-up job after use.
I found the various attachments fitted together without any problems, but I am a reasonably fit man, so can see that it may be tricky for someone less able. Overall, I would recommend this item - I can see it getting a fair bit of use in this house!
This machine has good and bad points of which I have listed below:
- Quick heat up
- Cleans hard floors/lino etc quickly and efficiently.
- Cloth is washable.
- Can come apart to be used in the bathroom as a handheld steamer, I used it on the oven, sinks, tiles etc.
- Comes with carpet glider, ideal for cleaning up spills when they happen.
- I don't feel like it does much in regards to carpets. My carpet in the living room is the only place I have tested it out on and it is a little old but didn't do anything for any dried marks.
- Water reservoir is tiny!! My kitchen, bathroom and toilet are tiny but I had to fill it up 2/3 times for the floor. Also when using as a hand held for the tiles etc I needed to refill multiple times.
Overall I would say it is a great little device. It's not too heavy although I imagine it could be for an elderly person or someone with physical difficulties. I would recommend this but would just say do not expect it to get out old stains on carpets or to work miracles with them either. I mainly brought it for the lino floors so for this it is perfect, and a great price too. I would also recommend you buy an extra pack of cloths.
