Vax Air Cylinder
The Air cylinder is Vax’s most powerful compact multi cyclonic cylinder vacuum cleaner.
Designed in Britain by an iconic British company, the Vax Air cylinder combines power, dust capacity and lightness to create a high performance vacuum cleaner that's easy to carry, easy to use and easy to store away This lightweight vacuum has 30% more suction and 60% more dust capacity than the average multi-cyclonic cylinder, making it the perfect choice for busy homes.
Constant, Powerful Suction
Multi-cyclonic technology gives you powerful, efficient cleaning performance that lasts. Twelve cyclones inside the Air cylinder spin rapidly to separate dust from the airflow so it collects in the container, not the filters. As the filters don’t get blocked with dust, you always have constant, powerful suction as you clean and there’s no frustrating drop off in performance.
Full size performance in a lightweight package
The Air cylinder has all the power and capacity of a full size vacuum cleaner, just in a smaller and lighter package. As it's so light, it's easy to carry upstairs and around your home, without giving you backache. Its compact design means it takes up less space in your cupboard too, so it's perfect for modern homes where storage is at a premium.
If you are sensitive to allergies, Air has H12 HEPA filtration to remove pollen, dust mites and other allergens from the airflow, so you can breathe more easily.
Ideal for carpets and hard floors
The Air cylinder’s combination floor head means you can quickly switch between vacuuming hard floors and carpets. There’s also crevice tool and a handy 2-in-1 upholstery tool and dusting brush for cleaning your furniture, skirting boards and in tight spaces. The dust container is quick to empty too, simply hold it over a bin and press the release button.
The Vax Air cylinder’s market leading 6 year guarantee gives you complete peace of mind.
Also available in this range, the Air Pet has a TurboTool for picking up stubborn animal hairs and anti-bacterial HEPA filtration to help keep pet-related odours at bay. The Air Total Home has a long stretch hose to reach right to the top of your staircase and six different cleaning tools, so you always have just the right one for the job.

As others have mentioned the dirt goes into a 'primary separator' before going into the main dirt container. Why they have designed this I have no idea as the 'primary separator' is tiny and any hairs vacuumed up immediately become wrapped around it which then catches all the fluff too. The result of this is that every few minutes you are taking everything apart and pulling dirt out with your fingers - this is the only way to remove long tangled hair.
Once I've washed my hands after this job I then find that suction has suddenly stopped so I then have to take the machine apart and remove the pre-motor filter. This will clog with dust and dog hair after every room and needs to be banged against a wall outside several times to clear it. It also needs to be washed frequently - which shortens it's life considerably.
Another wash of hands then we swing into the next room whereupon the post-motor hepa filter then flings itself off leaving a black pile of dust on the floor. This then needs to be reattached - it's a terrible design and takes several attempts and results in another wash of hands.
Ironincally I chose this machine due to the allergy hepa filters but I end up covered in dust and sneezing my head off whenever I use it. Asthma sufferers should definitely steer clear.
The fittings are all cheap - particularly if you are used to a Dyson or similar. The floor head brush just pushes on and does not clip into place which means that it often falls off whilst in use. This has happened several times when I've been vacuuming our wooden floors leaving scratches across the wood from the suddenly exposed metal tube. My tube is also now taped together as the telescopic bit broke.
In Vax's defence the customer care is excellent and they recently sent me out a whole new cylinder free of charge when the machine stopped picking up completely and was emitting a burning smell. A mere three months later, however, the problem has reoccurred. I have taken everything to pieces, cleaned everything I can get to but I feel like it is about to blow up whenever I use it.
I cannot express enough how much I hate this machine. There are still three years left on the warranty but I cannot face having it in my life any longer. It is incapable of picking up anything larger that the tiniest speck of dust - paperclip? no chance, feather? impossible, hair is just pushed around till it forms a ball then I have to pick it up by hand. So instead of telephoning Vax and have them replace all the various disfunctional parts I have decided to just cut my losses and go back to Dyson.
This machine is cheap for a reason. HIghly unrecommended.
The first time I used it I was impressed by its suction and the fact it worked well on wooden floors and carpet. My flat was really tiny and in less than 5 minutes everything was nice and clean. The second time I noticed that it wasn't as strong as it was originally but I kept using it. After a couple of months, the side filter located in one of the wheels start falling off. I tried to find many creative ways to fit it in place but I just couldn't. That was just the beginning.
Since It wasn't working properly anymore I tried to clean the whole system. Saw the instructions on the manual and cleaned every little thing I could - but still, all that power that impressed me at the first time was gone.
Gave it a couple of more months and tried calling VAX for support. Every single time I called them they suggested that I should clean the equipment, even when I told them that I tried that option at least 20 times. That happened all 7 times that I called them, and VAX showed no intention to help me fixing my vacum cleaner. It feels great to buy a product that has a massive "6 years warranty" sticker and all you can really get from this warranty is an unhelpful service that has absolutely no intention to fix your problem.
Well done, Vax - I'll never buy anything with your brand and I'll make sure that everyone that I know do the same.
If you have carpets there is an optional attachment that spins the brush in the head, but unless you need that this one should do just fine.
