Product Description

Product Description

Vaughan Williams had begun collecting folk-songs and carols in 1903. Many Folk-songs and Carols were collected in the early 1900s by Vaughan Williams and Ella Mary Leather who visited local gypsies in Herefordshire where together they rescued traditional songs that may well have disappeared forever. These songs and carols remind us of our childhood and the power and beauty of songs sung by those generations long before our own. Sung by Derek Welton an Australian Baritone a very much sought after concert artist. Derek has performed at the Barbican, Cadogan Hall, Royal Albert Hall, The Sage Gateshead, Bridgewater Hall, Symphony Hall, Birmingham and the Wigmore. Iain Burnside once again accompanies for Albion Records, who enjoys a unique reputation as pianist and broadcaster.

Review

This excellent CD assembles 20 of Vaughan Williams's own carol arrangements, with six folk songs for measure. The soloist is the young Derek Welton, whose manly, oaken baritone is offset by Iian Burnside's superbly supportive accompaniments. The Twelve Apostles and The Truth sent from above are particular highlights of this disc, but every track has something to offer.Highly recommended. Performance ***** Recording ***** --BBC Music Magazine,Christmas'11

Welton is an excellent singer, his vibrant baritone perfect for swaggering nature of some of the songs, while he can scale down tenderly for others. --IRR,Dec'11

Vaughan Williams is the focus on a disc spanning his Eight Traditional English Carols , the Six Studies in English Folk Songs and the Twelve Traditional Carols from Herefordshire . Attractively performed by the Australian baritone Derek Welton and the pianist Iain Burnside, the programme makes for an evocative vista of bygone Christmas times. --Sunday Telegraph,11/12/11

Vaughan Williams loved Christmas, and probably devoted more music to it than any other British composer - certainly in modern times. It is no surprise, therefore, to find that among the 800 folksongs he collected was a decent number of folk-carols, and these, along with a few rare folksongs, are well-represented on Albion's latest release of RVW rarities. In reading the liner notes and listening to this CD two things are immediately obvious. First, there is the sheer physical extertion expended by the composer in collecting folksongs around the turn of the last century. He travelled the country listening to local singers and noting down their efforts. His collecting in Sussex, Essex and Norfolk is well-known, but here we find contributions from Dorset, Derbyshire, Herefordshire, Staffordshire and Yorkshire - and all this in an age when public transport would not always have been easy. The second point is that although all these pieces are traditional tunes, the fingerprint of RVW can always be found in the accompaniment.

The carols and folksongs speak directly to the listener without any frills, and any further comment would be superfluous. There are, in any case, full liner notes which not only provide all the texts, but a brief background to when and where each piece was collected. All the listener need do is sit back and savour.

There is a good mix of the relatively familiar ("On Christmas Night", "The Truth Sent From Above", "Wassail Song", "The Ploughman", "Rolling in the Dew") with the virtually unknown, and there are one or two familiar texts ("Dives and Lazarus", "God Rest You Merry Gentlemen") to less familiar tunes.

Vaughan Williams collected hundred of folk songs, and the discography is pitifully thin. Here at last is a disc of his delightful folk carols and a handful of not-well-known folk songs. They are an absolute delight and the performances are excellent. Full marks to all concerned -- and how about a follow-up disc?

A hugely enjoyable disc which I guarantee will get the discerning listener in the Christmas mood. The Vaughan Williams arrangements have great simplicity and clarity - indeed, they have genuine sincerity and the composer resisted the temptation to imprint his own stamp too heavily.

These are straightforward and honest performances of these lovely songs. Welton's baritone is pure and youthful but characterful when required. The balance between the voice and accompaniment is pretty much perfect. Beautiful.

I couldn't disagree with the other reviewer more. I love hearing RVW's carols in simple arrangements for piano and voice. It allows one to experience their beauty in an unadorned way. I found the singing quite pleasant and the whole enterprise to be extremely worthy. And BTW, I am by nature a very tough customer. Maybe this music just touches me in a way that makes me willing to suspend harsh judgment.

This could have been lovely. It is a boring dull singer. Everything sounds alike. Needs variety of instruments and some group singing.this was done on the cheap. A real rip off by a dull singer. Wrecked some nice selections.
