Vaughan Williams had begun collecting folk-songs and carols in 1903. Many Folk-songs and Carols were collected in the early 1900s by Vaughan Williams and Ella Mary Leather who visited local gypsies in Herefordshire where together they rescued traditional songs that may well have disappeared forever. These songs and carols remind us of our childhood and the power and beauty of songs sung by those generations long before our own. Sung by Derek Welton an Australian Baritone a very much sought after concert artist. Derek has performed at the Barbican, Cadogan Hall, Royal Albert Hall, The Sage Gateshead, Bridgewater Hall, Symphony Hall, Birmingham and the Wigmore. Iain Burnside once again accompanies for Albion Records, who enjoys a unique reputation as pianist and broadcaster.
This excellent CD assembles 20 of Vaughan Williams's own carol arrangements, with six folk songs for measure. The soloist is the young Derek Welton, whose manly, oaken baritone is offset by Iian Burnside's superbly supportive accompaniments. The Twelve Apostles and The Truth sent from above are particular highlights of this disc, but every track has something to offer.Highly recommended. Welton is an excellent singer, his vibrant baritone perfect for swaggering nature of some of the songs, while he can scale down tenderly for others. --IRR,Dec'11
Vaughan Williams is the focus on a disc spanning his Eight Traditional English Carols , the Six Studies in English Folk Songs and the Twelve Traditional Carols from Herefordshire . Attractively performed by the Australian baritone Derek Welton and the pianist Iain Burnside, the programme makes for an evocative vista of bygone Christmas times. --Sunday Telegraph,11/12/11

The carols and folksongs speak directly to the listener without any frills, and any further comment would be superfluous. There are, in any case, full liner notes which not only provide all the texts, but a brief background to when and where each piece was collected. All the listener need do is sit back and savour.
There is a good mix of the relatively familiar ("On Christmas Night", "The Truth Sent From Above", "Wassail Song", "The Ploughman", "Rolling in the Dew") with the virtually unknown, and there are one or two familiar texts ("Dives and Lazarus", "God Rest You Merry Gentlemen") to less familiar tunes.Read more ›
These are straightforward and honest performances of these lovely songs. Welton's baritone is pure and youthful but characterful when required. The balance between the voice and accompaniment is pretty much perfect. Beautiful.
