The Varta Backup Charger is the perfect mobile charging device for the 21st century. Equipped with six adaptors for all your mobile devices including many popular mobile phone adaptors and the new standard for future mobile phones micro-USB (see packaging image at top of page for details). Your mp3 player, camera, or any device that you regularly carry around can also be charged.
Why rechargeables? The 3 E's: Economy--after the 4th charge you start saving money, and since these batteries can be recharged up to 1000 times over the life of a battery, you could save over 350 pounds per battery. Environment--with each battery being able to be charged up to 1,000 times you not only save the impact of 1,000 batteries on the environment, you also save on packaging and reduce your carbon footprint. Ease--save time by always having batteries at your finger tips--no last minute dashes to the shop.
The charger works from the USB In from a laptop or other device. Inside the charger is two high capacity AA batteries, once charged the Backup Charger can either be used to charge your device via its USB Out or if you prefer, you can remove the batteries and put them directly into your device. This flexibility means that you need never run out of charge at again.
The backup charger is fast and flexible, ready when you need it most. It has a 3-year warranty for your piece of mind and its compact size is ideal for the environmentally friendly traveller. Better still, the charger includes 2 x AA Varta Rechargeable batteries. Rather than damaging the environment and your wallet by using large amounts of batteries each year, make the switch to rechargeable batteries. We recommend this charger with Varta's range of Power Accu batteries. These batteries have high mAh capacities meaning more time between charging, and many of our range come complete with ready-to-use--meaning you can use the batteries straight out of the pack. A recent Which? Magazine award voted our AA 2700 mAh batteries their "Best Buy".
Varta is one of Europe's leading manufacturers of portable batteries and lighting. It comes with a usb - usb lead from which one end is detachable to connect one of the other 6 `heads'. A slightly less obvious use is to use the supplied lead to go direct from a usb source (eg a mains charger/PC) if mains power is available, but you have forgotten your charging cable.
As a battery charger its main attribute is a compact and light design. It takes AAA & AA. The charge is trickle - so 20 hours for 2700 mAh is required. I would be more inclined to take ready charged batteries (using my rapid charger which can do 4 AAs in 4 hours), or in emergency buy some normal AAs.
Overall a versatile little gadget. It could do with a bag to keep all the bits together, but that aside I guess most people will only use a couple of the heads supplied. If you are travelling this would make a worthwhile investment as backup source of power for one or more gadgets that we all seem to carry with us these days. Recommended.
At just 6cm long with the battery tray pushed in, it is extremely compact (see my uploaded photo) and easy to carry. Its batteries charge via a standard USB so can be charged from a PC or the USB socket now available on some car cigar lighter sockets. Just plug it in to charge up the two 1.2v 2100mAh batteries supplied then, once fully-charged, you'll have sufficient power to charge your mobile phone, Blackberry, sat-nav, digital camera (providing it charges with its battery in situ) or other electronic gadget. Connectors are supplied for Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, Motorola and Blackberry in addition to the mini USB.
If you're likely to need to charge several items or will be away from a power supply for a longer period, then you can carry extra AA or AAA Ni-MH batteries and draw power from these. The instructions recommend using Varta's own brand but any Ni-MH rechargeables will work - I used a pair of 2800mAh while away during a weekend of freezing weather which severely shortened my phone's battery life and the charger gave it a much-needed boost.
The only drawback I've found are that it can take 20 hours to charge 2 x 2700mAh batteries 16 hours to charge the supplied 2100mAh or 6 hours to charge 800mAh AAA batteries - but it has to be remembered that this is a backup charger intended primarily for use when there is no access to a power supply although it can also be used as a day to day charger.Read more ›
Unlike charging batteries with the standard chargers that plug into your wall sockets, you will find the Varta takes alot longer to charge through the USB. However, don't be discouraged by this, as the Varta is portable, it means you can charge on the go via your car (if you have the suitable connection), and that you can just charge up whenever you're using your laptop.
Rechargable batteries are more environmentally friendly as you don't throw them away like regular batteries - and as it charges through your car or laptop/computer, you use less power to charge too which means it's also more economically friendly in the long run.
