I ordered this solder station because I had decided that my corded 30 watt soldering station was not quite up for the job as I use my soldering Iron for soldering drone parts, were if a wire was to come disconnected you would have a piece of very expensive equipment heading straight for the earth.
I ordered the Iron but unfortunately it must of been lost in the post (seller was very helpful and issued full refund), so whilst looking in Maplin i encountered the exact same Solder station, priced at a slightly lower price.
When opening the box for it I saw that the sponge was stuck on the base with some double sided tape, and was flat and hard, so I put a few drops of water on the sponge which quickly filled it up.
I tested the soldering iron by trying to solder 2 thick wires to each other, I plugged the wire in and turned the dial nearly up to full, after waiting 5 mins I put a bit of solder on the tip, smoke, so turned down the heat a tiny bit, then I waited, put a bit of solder on the tip, not so much smoke perfect. I then take the tip of the iron and place it on the thick wire, it is temperature controlled so it should turn up the power, slowly, slowly, after a couple of minuets later the wire had heated up enough to apply solder to properly, I then cleaned the nib on the sponge, turned the knob all the way down.
Pros And Cons Pros; Good value Easy to hold pen like grip Compact Gets hot
Cons; Takes a long time to heat up If you use the temperature controlled function then it takes a LONG time to reach desired temp Problem with delivery

I bought this as a replacement to my trusty old Weller iron which I could no longer get replacement bits for. The only reason i have given it only 4 stars is because the base unit is a bit on the light side and can be knocked over and the flex from the iron to the controller unit is not as flexible as it might be. Other than that the iron works well, heats up quickly and the heat controller works well - even if it does "buzz" when in a low setting. the bit that was supplied is quite small (about 2mm) and is ideal for small componets. The price was much cheaper than the same item in Maplins too!
This is not the best iron i have used. It is well made though and for the price represents reasonably good value. When working with silver solder it is really struggling to melt it quickly, meaning for electronics you risk have the iron in contact for too long. I've also had some dry joints as a result of this; even with the temperature dialled all the way up to maximum. The heat just does not seem to get right to the tip, but further up the shaft its inferno! I've been using this regularly for a few months now and this review reflects that expericence.
This is a very decent soldering iron for the price, i had two ceaper non temperature controlled irons before but they both broke on me however for the extra 6 or 6 pounds I would defonetly recommend buying this iron. I use it for general fixing things and wiring up stuff and it works very well, the only slight problem Is that it takes a little while to warm up but that's not too much of an issue
It's cheap, it works and I can't justify the price of a full on soldering station because I don't do enough circuit soldering. As long as you crank up the temperature gauge to the top band it will do for silver soldering ( otherwise known as lead free). Words to the wise though, if you are desoldering and resoldeing pcb's, it is probably better to invest in a hot air gun as chips often have the centre soldered as well as the visible legs!
Its great, just not real temperature control more like now its hot and now its hotter. Which is fine by me I just needed a reliable iron with stand and cleaning base. Used it a dozen times. Great price for what it is. Will get a professional one when it becomes a daily need and I have a bit more to spend.
Heats up quickly and creates considerably better joints, with the same technique, than the cheaper 25w soldering iron I've put up with for years
I'm an occasional user so wasn't interested in spending lots of cash. Yes the plastic iron rest does smoke disconcertingly, and consequently smells a bit, but no other complaints. Picked up an extra couple of spare tips for it too.
This has not stood the test of time too well. Yes, it works well enough BUT (1) the cable between the iron and the stand is much heavier than need be which makes it less than perfect to use, (2) the bits become loose too easily, (3) the sponge disintegrated after a year, (4) the light stopped working a little later and finally (5) the holder for the iron is a well made metal one, but the end is a plastic collar; this gets hotter than it can stand and eventually it parted from the metal with its bayonet connection distorted. It did the job but I would not buy it again.
