Vanishing Point: Perspective for Comics from the Ground Up Paperback – 19 Dec. 2007

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 243 ratings

Master perspective like the pros! Vanishing Point shows you how to conquer the fundamentals of perspective drawing and then equips you with technical tricks and tools that make dynamic and complex scenes a snap. This complete guide helps you build your understanding of perspective to an intuitive level so you can draw anything you can imagine. Inside you'll find:    • Complete instruction on drawing in one-, two- and three-point perspective and four- and five-point curvilinear perspective (where "straight" lines are drawn as curves). Curvilinear perspective has not been taught in any other perspective book - until now!    • Full-color, step-by-step demonstrations move you beyond the theories and let you practice the techniques in real scenes.    • A special chapter on drawing curves helps you break out of the box and draw cylinders, ellipses, cars and, most importantly, people in perfect perspective.    • Shortcuts and tips show you how to create believable perspective in no time flat. No matter what your skill level, Vanishing Point offers you a new way of looking at perspective and lets you draw as though you have decades of drawing experience - even if you don't. You'll learn everything you need to know to pour your imagination on the page with power and confidence.

This review is for 'Vanishing Point' by Jason Cheeseman-Meyer.

An incredible book that has a special system able to give your illustrations that missing factor. Previously, like yourselves I was sat there reading through these reviews to further understand what could be learned from this topic. To no surprise, this has been an extremely beneficial purchase.

If there are any titles that you may consider on the subject of perspective, I highly suggest that this book is listed in your top 3 choices. The information contained is from many years of research and study, and is based on a system that does not fail, when applied correctly.

Follow the simple steps in this book, and after 1 week you will notice a tremendous change. Your eyes will absorb the environment differently, and you will start to see the world around you, very differently.

To put things into perspective, this book is the bible of visual perspective illustrations, or illusions. With it, you will be able to create worlds within worlds of fantasy, or reality. The choices are endless. The only limitation between you and this book, are those which you set within your mind.

You may never want to approach your creativity in the same way again. Vanishing Point will open you up. Free you of those situations that you previously avoided because everything you had drawn up until now, was using the same approach. Your mind knew what you WANTED to see, but you were blocked from expressing your true visions....

Say goodbye to yesterday, and get your copy of Vanishing Point today!

Leave it until tomorrow.... and you may never know.

Thank you Jason Cheeseman-Meyer I can see clearly now.

After a few years slowly learning how to draw characters it was time to start improving my scenes including backgrounds.
It feels a bit nerdy getting the set square and compass out but, by following the text and simple exercises, it shows how good results can come from a simple process. It is a bit painstaking to create an entire scene but that's no fault of the book.
It covers more than I think I'll need : 1,2,3,4,5 point perspective plus gems such as 'Putting it all together' and 'Tricks and Troubleshooting'.
If you like more visually exciting books then be aware there is a lot of wireframe with just a few full fleshed out drawings. It is quite 'mathematical' but the clarity and results are superb.

This book does a really good job of teaching perspective. I learned a lot from it and will continue using it for reference. I sometimes found it unclear though. There are some concepts that his drawings and notes didn't make very clear. I would have to read things like that over and over to make sense of them. Occasionally I just couldn't understand and would have to refer to a video on youtube about the same subject. I also wish the author added a specific section into the book about dealing with vanishing points that are far off the page, as I could have done with more help on that. I also wish he talked about shadows more. Overall though, great guide book, I recommend it.

I cannot say enough good things about this book - it is brilliant!!! EVERYTHING you could possibly want to know about one, two, three, four and five point linear and curvilinear perspective is explained with great clarity and in a fashion which allows one to quickly revise as and when needed. There is even a section on cheats for when one is pushed for time and troubleshooting for when things look peculiar and need fixing. This is not perspective for comics; this is perspective for every single art form imaginable and should be on every keen artist's bookshelf!

This is an excellent book, and not just for comic artists. Clear, comprehensive, technical, any kind of artist can learn to make their scenes more accurate and more dynamic. I did find it particularly useful as a fantasy artist as it teaches you to conceptualise rather than just copy backgrounds. One of the best and most useful books on drawing I've purchased.

I borrowed this book from the library before deciding to purchase a copy. Having seen it in the flesh, so to speak, I ordered a copy - which I received next day thank you. I was, however, somewhat disappointed that it was an Amazon reprint and the quality of the paper and printing was not as good as the original - I could not see anything to say that would be the case. Still the content appears to be the same so I can work with it.

A really strong look at perspective. I found the chapter on drawing the figure in perspective extremely helpful. Also has chapters on fish-eye lens effects, which is rare in a perspective book.

Really good resource for comic artists and visual storytellers.

I've recently started drawing again and needed some sort of guide on how to get perspective correct, so my efforts looked presentable. The book came quickly (a couple of days) and was just what I needed. The illustrations made it very easy to learn techniques and tips and pick them up quickly. Before, drawing background was something I dreaded, now I enjoy it as much (if not more) than the figure drawing
