HASH(0x99480aa4) out of 5 stars Jack Flemming: The vampire detective for people who don't like vampires 7 Mar. 2011
By Deborah Mcalister Holland - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I used to be a fiction snob who looked down my nose at vampire books. Then someone left "The Vampire Files, Volume One" on an Air New Zealand flight. Eight hours into the 14-hour flight, I started reading. Since then, I've read every title P.N. Elrod has published -- and freely admit the error of my old ways.

Jack Fleming, the undead former journalist and nightclub owner, is the star of "The Vampire Files". But the cabaret singer girlfriend (Bobbie), the debonair British actor turned private eye, and a host of Prohibition-era mobsters and other characters, are what bring "The Vampire Files" to life for me. Like the Cullens of Twilight, Fleming is an ethical vampire who feeds primarily at the Chicago stockyards. But he's also a hard-boiled detective when he has to be -- and a vulnerable, sometimes bewildered man most of the time.

If you haven't read any of Pat Elrod's books, pick up "The Vampire Files" now. But be warned. If she can hook somebody like me who sneered at the whole genre of urban fantasy, she can hook anybody. So read at your own peril. Stock up on snacks and prepare for a marathon read, though. These stories are hard to put down once you pick them up!

HASH(0x99480af8) out of 5 stars Continuing a great series 12 April 2011
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com

Smartly written, expertly paced and cunningly plotted, the Vampire Files, as a series has to be one best kept secrets of modern fiction. Jack Flemming is a witty, charismatic and compelling protagonist who continues to grow and develop as the series progresses. The anthology reprints the 7th and 8th books in the series. A Chill in the Blood is a classic noir gangster story that keeps the pressure up as Jack tries to keep his friends safe while heading off a gang war in 1930's Chicago. The second book in this collection, The Dark Sleep, is tale of guilt, deception, murder and dance numbers!
HASH(0x9a09a5e8) out of 5 stars Beware the kindle versions. 17 Sept. 2015
By Joshua Miles - Published on Amazon.com

I love P.N. Elrod and the Vampire Files series of books, however I would recommend the physical book over the kindle edition since whoever is in charge of proofing the converted versions failed miserably and there are so many errors in the kindle version where the scanning process didn't correctly read the pages and whoever is supposed to check for that apparently either doesn't exist or just doesn't do their job. 100% you should buy these books because they are great, just don't buy the kindle edition until someone fixes the MANY MANY MANY errors in the kindle versions.
HASH(0x9982c570) out of 5 stars I Never Liked Vampires Much until I Read The Vampire Files 27 Mar. 2015

I'm a fan of this series and its unique take on vampires. It manages to keep me interested even when nothing exciting is happening in the story.
I was never much for vampire stories until I found Vampire Files, it downplays the vampire aspect and focuses more on the events.

What can be said? This is just another example of P. N. Elrod's typical excellent writing. Buy it. Buy it now. But buy the first two and read them first.
