Product description

Review

This story is no ordinary vampire tale. Mead has done her homework on Romanian folklore and Orthodox Catholic saints, and she uses it to weave a unique and mesmerizing mystery with a whodunit ending that even the most skilled detectives will not predict. With social angst that every teenager can appreciate and sexual tension that leaves Stephanie Meyer's Twilight looking like a children's book, this little gem is sure to be a hit.--VOYA
Mead's absorbing, debut YA novel, the first in a new series, blends intricately detailed fantasy with a contemporary setting, teen-relevant issues, and a diverse...cast of supporting characters. Occasional steamy sex and a scattering of vulgar language demand mature readers, but teens able to handle the edgy elements will speed through this vamp story and anticipate the next installment.--Booklist

YA stories like Vampire Academy will inevitably be compared to Twilight, but they shouldn't be. I loved them both, partly for their differences - this is a grittier series with a more complex plot that revolves around a vampire class system of Moroi (mortal vampire royalty), Dhampirs (children of a vampire and human) and Strigoi (immortal vampire without morals or social conscience) - with humans very much the underdogs - and provides us with action, suspense, forbidden love, deceit and mystery.

The main protagonist, Rose, is a rebellious dhampir with attitude, whose social standing and abilities require her to take on the dangerous responsibility of being a guardian to the moroi - a role she has been trained for all her life. The story begins when Rose and her best friend Lissa (a moroi) are forcefully returned to their private vampire school, St. Vladimir's Academy, after being on the run. The girls should have then slotted back into their old routines: but things have changed at school, Lissa is developing her unexpected magical skills, and danger is lurking!

The characters are well developed and Mead's writing style is page turning - I was gripped, and whizzed through this whole series. I'm surprised it's taken this long for the film to come out! I just hope it does the books justice.

I love this book, the story line is amazing and well put across to the reader. It isn't hard to read making it perfect for young adult readers, the only thing that would put me off recommending this to a younger reader than myself (12) is some of the adult content, there for I recommend this book to 12-15 year olds. This book keeps you gripped with thrill and adventure around every corner of St. Vladimir's school for Vampires! If it were possible I would give this book a 4.5, the reason I haven't given it 5 is because it isn't one of the best books I have read, I still absolutely love it though and couldn't put it down! I will defiantly be reading the next book in the series!

I loved the first three quarters of this book which is atmospheric and detailed. The bonded relationship between Rose and Lissa, the mysteries of the vampire world, the backstory subtly intertwined with the present, all made this feel fresh and different from the plethora of vampire-school tales out there. The slow growth, too, of the relationship between Rose and the lovely Dimitri felt different and far more emotionally involving than the usual high-school pairing.

But just when I was sinking into all the delicious emotional angst, Mead suddenly ups the action, and all that careful character building went out the window. The rush of events, the predictable villains, all crammed in together really distracted me from the careful and absorbing work which had gone before.

So I loved most of this book but ended it sorely disappointed - Mead proves that she can write with a rare sensitivity and restraint and can really get under her characters' skins, but the shift from emotional focus to just plot left me feeling a tad cheated.

I'm long long past YA and i love the series, its full of drama dnaction wrapped up with beleivable plots.
