The Value of Difference: Eliminating Bias in Organisations is beautifully written, confident, assertive. Dr Kandola's book is incredibly helpful about breaking the frozen state, in which diversity finds itself in many organisations. The Value of Difference: Eliminating Bias in Organisationsprovides a framework to explain why diversity has stalled in organisations. In presenting this great book Dr Kandola provides a balance between the anecdotal (stories we know and may be aware of) and the the theoretical, to engender our understanding and learning. He tackles the current pretence that diversity can be sold on the business case alone, without frightening managers, by the mention of social justice. Dr Kandola effectively explores the importance of felt discrimination, as a key to explaining and understanding equality and diversity issues; and provides a abasis for developing leadership.
An excellent book, perhaps the best on tackling diversity in the UK on the market at the present time.
If you manage organisations, work in diversity or people managegement, or just want to undertsand diversity in the workplace, get the Value of Difference. It will put some zest and cheer into your life.
It brings together the evidence for bias in organisations but them presents some practical ways of dealing with it without it becoming, like some other books in the area do, some utopian ideal we are unlikely to achieve.
I think the key point from this book is that we all recognise that we all have biases, and stop pretending. Nothing ever got better from pretending it doesn't exist, or pretending it doesn't apply to you!
