A real 'find' this one. I bought this via its inclusion in "1001 Albums To Hear Before You Die" and its discovery, alone, justifies the purchase of the book.

Although unmistakably Indian in origin(and is indeed classified as Indian classical music), the music is, nonetheless, instantly appealing in a way that reaches beyond national boundaries. Most people would be familiar with the Indian music of Sitar and Tabla. So perhaps the most immediately striking thing is the prominence of the Kashmiri Santoor(a hammered dulcimer) and flute which, along with Guitar and Tabla weave their, sometimes complex and at others simple, but always gorgeous, patterns, together.

The music is beautifully soothing and relaxing but never threatens to fall into muzak territory, rather it has a gentle intensity which focuses the listeners attention while allowing them to be carried off to some other place...It is also very engaging, never 'difficult'.

I certainly don't consider myself any sort of an expert on Indian classical music and some will tell you that there are greater works and finer examples of the form but even those people would agree that this is an excellent introduction to the genre. Regardless of category It is certainly some of the most incredible music I have heard in a long time.

In between western music, I listen to classic indian music once in a while. And this album is by far the one there appeals most to me. It is brilliant. Right up there with the best recordings of western classical music or the best recordings in jazz like Miles Davis 'Kind of Blue'. If you know what I mean, I'm sure you will enjoy this album as much as I do.

This collection has a number of combinations of indian instruments and formats.
In all cases the musicianship is excellent and the combinations provide a great display of the various sounds of India.
WEhilst I enjoy this collection very much for the purist seeking the beguiling sound of the santoor then look elsewhere for Pandit Shivkumar Sharma and in particular the collection of him playing with his father.

Don't get me wrong, this is a great album but I feel I have to give it 4 stars because I know of another album that I feel is the true number 1. This contender for the top spot is the same style of music as 'Call of the Valley' but I think you get more involved with the tracks as they are far longer and build up as they unfold. Are you wanting to know the name of this album? It is available on Amazon too and is called 'Moods of the day - Evening Ragas - Indian Classical Music' It's an all instrumental affair much the same as 'Call of the Valley' but to my mind far more relaxing. Listen for yourself.

This really is a classic albaum, beautiful, haunting and timeless. If you wish to listen to some of the most accessible but still authentic Indian music this is for you. The flow of tracks, variations. rhythms and melodies are superb.

I enjoy listening to this recording in the evenings. It is beautiful music - all instrumental and wonderfully balanced and subtle.
