Finally! I have the poster for this film as my iPhone cover, managed to find a version of the theme music to include as a ring tone, but really, really wanted the album. It is such an atmospheric film, and the music likewise. To have the whole album is just ... a dream fulfilled. It may seem an unlikely type of music to create an altered state, much like the film, but it does.

Incredibly evocative music. If you enjoyed the film, you will enjoy this album.

The score to Nicholas Winding Refn's minimalist Viking Epic is equally strange and brilliant , and is a crucial part of the film which is largely dialogue free.

All the music in the film is included along with 4 additional unused cues. The key tracks are 'Free' which is the organ drone played when One eye places the head on a pole .... 'Hell' is slowly selling drone piece played over the scene where they all trip out , and finally the title track which is included twice , as 'Return' and 'End Credits'.

Astonishing and essential !

Aabsolute class ,what a surprise I thought this film was guna be a cheesy American copy of 300 or something of that ilk ,it turned out to be a deep metaphor of a film .if ya know ya Norse mythology ya ll love it ! Up there in me top 10 films with dead man and apocalypse now etc !

5.0 out of 5 stars Headphone Commute Review 13 April 2014
By Headphone Commute - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Vinyl
Having not seen Valhalla Rising by Nicolas Winding Refn, I could still tell that it is a pretty drab affair. This 2009 film follows a Norse warrior, a boy, and a band of Christians in pursuit of a Crusade set in 1,000 AD. The soundtrack, released by Milan Records almost four years after the film, features fifteen tracks, alternating between short soundscapes by Giles Lamb and Douglas MacDougall; and longer cinematic pieces (sometimes approaching the ten minute mark) by the actual composers of the score, Peter Peter and Peter Kyed. The atmosphere rumbles with low frequencies, digital growls, and viking drums. The dark ambient drones are incredibly sinister, sometimes diving into abyssal and infernal depths, where sin and evil suffer in pain. Although I’m missing the visual component of this story, I must admit that its sonic part makes up in full. Auditory images of sacrificial rites, demonology and Norse mythology fill the foreground of this canvas, while track titles, such as “Caged“, “Christians“, and “Into Hell” provide the story behind the film. This is not a piece for the faint-hearted or deep listening at nights, unless, of course, you dare to let the music scare you. If latter is the case, well, come on in, turn off all the lights, turn up you sub (or grab some seriously bass-heavy headphones), and immerse yourself in this cavernous and endless trip, preferably in a horizontal position. Milan Records is a Los Angeles based label releasing favorite scores by Max Richter, Jóhann Jóhannsson and Clint Mansell.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scare and annoy your friends with this soundtrack! 10 May 2014

This soundtrack's a great listen when you're driving down ill-lit and twisty roads at night. It's also good to play when you're entertaining guests, as there's this one song with totally unexpected and jarring orchestral hits.
4.0 out of 5 stars Great score but poor vinyl pressing by Milan Records. 10 April 2015
By Chasemouse - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Vinyl
I was happy to get this LP for a good price but I may have been better off with the pricier WeMe Records release. The pressing I received by Milan is quite noisy (side 2 is worse than 1) and rather flat sounding which is tough on such a sparse recording. Also, there were notable handling smudges on the vinyl despite being factory sealed. Perhaps a deep cleaning will help but right out the jacket this one is a disappointment. Glad it came with a download card but I would have preferred a better sounding LP. Played on my Rega RP1.
