Another brilliant book from Higgins. Written in the same style that made 'The Eagle has Landed' so popular, Higgins weaves historical fact with his own fiction. The story starts with a reporter arriving in a small village. He wants to have a look at the body of a recently deceased man. While at the morgue he notices an ageing US general approaching, and slips into the shadows unnoticed.

The two later meet in bar and the general is confronted by the reporter who wants to know the reason he was there to examine the body. What follows is an intriguing tale of 'what ifs'. We are transported back to the final days in Berlin at the Führerbunker. We meet the Nazi high command and in particular the story concentrates on Martin Bormann and what may/may not have happened to him (any regular Higgins readers will know this a topic he visits on a regular basis).

As usual with Higgins we meet a vast number of different characters, with good and bad personalities on either side of the war. In particular we are introduced to Ritter, a highly decorated German Panzer commander, who is described as 'Death itself'.

I won't explain the characters or their reasons for being in the novel as this will spoil the storyline for other people. What I will say is that this book is one of Higgins best and will keep you guessing until the very end.

I have only recently come back to reading fiction and especially enjoy action novels. Having read some Jack Higgins long ago I picked Valhallah Exchange at random and enjoyed the plot but not the (deliberate?) style of running one scene into another without a gap indication (asterisks line). So two conversations places apart are blended into one. Perhaps this is a Kindle formatting fault because some scenes are visibly split.

Some technical errors but nothing serious unlike the Clive Cussler series.

Reviewing a book is a lot harder than reviewing a piece of electronics because one has to be careful not to give the plot away and ruin the experience for others. So with that in mind all i can say is that i was reading another book when i picked this up to browse and before i knew it i was sucked in. It is rare these days that i read a book and lose all track of time, but this book is one of those. This is my first Jack Higgins book and i will deffinately be reading more of his.

Had this novel in paperback format for many years and every now and then it comes out for another read. Having decided to get rid of all my old paperbacks this was one book I couldn't part with so it now resides on my Kindle.

A wonderful war story which I never get tired of reading.

Highly recommended.

Well written, engaging fiction novel covering the period at the very end of WW2 in Germany. The characters are well portrayed and brought to life without delving too deeply into their pasts.
