About the Author

Jean-Claude Mezieres and Pierre Christin created "Valerian" in 1967 after working in the USA together, one as a cowboy, the other a teacher. While "Valerian" is Mezieres' only comic series, he's worked as an illustrator in many other areas, including designs and sets for "The Fifth Element," and he was awarded the Grand Prix du festival d'Angouleme in 1984. Christin also works in collaboration with other artists such as Tardi and Bilal and writes novels and film scripts.

Volume 5 is the weakest from all of the Valerian adventures released so far. The story and characters are more simple but it didn't stop me to like it anyway. I can't wait for episode 6! Thanks Cinebook for releasing that.

5.0 out of 5 stars And The Master Made The Children Of Galaxity To Serve With Rigour.... 16 May 2015
By Zon||Eidolon - Published on Amazon.com

In this "Valerian and Laureline" adventure, the titular duo are shipwrecked on a planet ruled by an all-powerful Master, who quickly enslaves them using his Birds of Madness... will the two be able to escape and make it home to Galaxity? Of course they will! This is only the fifth (sixth if you count the unpublished-in-the-UK/US Volume 0) book in a long running series, after all. The fun is in seeing how they do it, and what else they accomplish along the way. This adventure reads like an episode of Star Trek with Valerian filling in for Captain Kirk, changing an alien society but only after it has forced itself on him. In some ways Pierre Christin is even more progressive than that groundbreaking show, especially with the writing of female characters (although Laureline wouldn't get a chance to really shine until the next volume). There's even a funny twist ending but I won't spoil it for you. Overall the writing is top-notch. And let's not forget Mssr. Mézières' gorgeous artwork! Seriously, half of the enjoyment of reading this is in relishing all the complexities and details of the illustrations.

This is a good printing by Cinebook. It is taller and wider than the typical American GN although it is also thinner. The paper is good quality and non-glossy. Detail is excellent and the colors likewise with no bleeding. All in all a great edition of a great read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, but not memorable 17 Jan. 2016
By wiredweird - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This 1973 comic has aged pretty well - perhaps only the style of art is a tad dated. Like the other volumes, this one presents a self-contained story, from crash landing to triumphal exit (almost), a certain amount of swashbuckling, a few giggles, and a bit of heroism in freeing the planet from its mysterious Master.

A good read, if brief, in an enjoyable series. I can't call it a landmark in comic art or storytelling, but it's fun.
