I found the vtech laptop very educational, with so many games to play, learning to spell, maths, creativity and so much more, I would recommend it, my daughter is quite delayed in academic development and this laptop not only makes her feel @very grown up@ But at the same time teaches so much. I'm mainly impressed by the actual amount of national curriculum 10/10 based activities there are to learn on it. 10/10!!

This is a budget 'laptop'-style game system for youngsters, with a set number of inbuilt games and nothing in the way of expansion capabilities. The monocolour display window is VERY small indeed inside the 'laptop' lid and lacks backlighting. The installed games do their thing nicely enough, but the 4-10 age range is on the generous side: most 7-10 year olds will be very conscious of the deficiencies of this model where it comes to genuine computing needs. The screen compares very poorly to the Nintendo DS that many children in this age bracket have and provides little incentive to use it. The 'Challenger' is also slightly problematic for the youngest age of recommended users, as 4 year olds learning letter sounds tend to be introduced first to the lower case alphabet - but the keyboard is a standard upper case model, and so not the best for supporting phonics-based activities.

IF you have a child on the younger end of the spectrum who HAS keyboard experience and/or has learned capital letters - e.g. Reception/Year 1 - and can get this at the kind of vastly reduced price that Amazon have been offering it at (I got one via Warehouse Deals and paid a good bit less than half the RRP), then this could be worth doing as a short-term educational support. But otherwise you might be better off scouring auction sites/ secondhand listings for a refurbished/secondhand early generation Linux-based netbook (full computing capabilities, few problems with viruses and a robust OS that tends to be fairly forgiving of use by youngsters), or looking for a budget tablet. They're generally a little more expensive than the RRP for this, but also have greater versatility and much wider useability for both school and entertainment purposes.

I wasn't expecting all that much for a £25 small children's laptop but this one is pretty much a joke. Educational? Yes if you want to learn to speak French i.e. salut! The screen is absolutely rubbish, it's like one of those old-school games with no background light, the voice absolutely does my head in and it's in fact not that straightforward to use (even for a grown up or then I'm just that dumb - or is this the "challenger" side of it? Just defies common sense if you ask me). Would never recommend anyone to buy this toy for their kid, go and find something that they'll enjoy more. The only few good points about this laptop is that it's easy to carry for your little one and they keyboard does look like a real laptop so you might be able to fool them there for a moment. It is also pretty durable but apart from that I think it's just overall a big disappointed and a complete waste of money.

This looks great and makes the little ones feel very important when playing with it but it is never played with for very long. I put this down to the screen being quite dark so it doesn't engage the kids as much as it could. Not bad.

Was quite disappointed with the screen, it is so tiny, which seems a real waste of space. If its a cost thing, sure people would rather pay a couple more quid and have something decent to look at. Also the fact hat the screen is so plastic, makes it look really like a toy ( which of course it is) but the more it 'looks like' a grown up computer, the better, wish I'd paid the extra and bought the leap pad.

To be honest it has hardly been used at all, so can't really comment on the educational value. Says it all really.
