Gramophone Classical Music Awards 2016 - Solo vocal category winner!
Alpha is very proud to welcome this grande dame of lyric art. A great Mozartian, she also excels in Gluck, Berlioz and Offenbach and has sung with the greatest, from Claudio Abbado to Marc Minkowski or Frans Brüggens.
Her rich discography features numerous repertoires but, up until now, it included only one recording of mélodies, whereas she is unanimously recognized as one of the worlds most eminent ambassadresses of the French art song.
With her accomplice Susan Manoff, a connoisseur of vocal music and a tremendously sensitive pianist, she has assembled this programme devoted to songs she loves, mixing a few wellknown gems and others, quite rare, such as this superb Néère, from Reynaldo Hahns Muses latines.
Ravishing performances from Gens and her superbly insightful pianist Susan Manoff; much of the music lies in Gens' clean but voluptuous lower-middle register, and her palette of wonderful autumnal colours coupled with her unfussy but keen responsiveness to the texts make for a very special disc indeed. --Presto Classical
Néère, which opens the disc and provides its title, has a grave, austere beauty that Gens captures perfectly...nothing in these performances is overdone; Gens allows the lyric beauty of each song to speak for itself, with the minimum of interference and the maximum of tonal beauty. --The Guardian
Gens, as one might expect, is exceptional in this repertoire. Most of the songs are about erotic anticipation and tristesse, and her dark, slightly smoky tone adds to the sensuality of it all. She sings as much off the text as the line, but nothing is nudged or forced in an overtly interventionist way... A Chloris is one of the best there is, and Hahn's Néère , which gives the disc its title, leaves you open-mouthed with its beauty. --Gramophone

This collection of songs by Reynaldo Hahn (1874-1947), Henri Duparc (1848-1933) and
Ernest Chausson (1855-1899) delivers a delicious warm rosy glow to the heart and spirit.
There are 24 numbers in the recital : 10 by Hahn, 5 by Duparc and 9 by Chausson. The
‘Sept Melodies’ Op. 2 by the latter (composed between 1879 and 1882) are especially
beautiful. The line and bloom in Ms Gens’ voice in her performance of ‘Nanny’ (Op. 2 :1)
is both thrilling and touching in equal measure. Elsewhere, her take on Hahn’s somewhat
Handelian ‘Etudes Latines : Neere’ (1900) hangs in the air like a ray of soft golden sunlight.
Of the Duparc pieces ‘Chanson Triste’ (1868) steals the show with its aching sense of pathos.
Ms Gens deserves our applause for one of the loveliest classical releases of the year.
