No archaeologist ever took such care to construct such luxurious lines for his readership. Browne, on the level of language as well as inquiry, is not that strict, exacting, stereotypically staunch fusspot of science...Browne presents himself as more of an interlocutor, a foil reflecting the given light of the sun so others may feel a little less dark in their darkness.--Greg Gerke

Unfortunately, the "preface" by W.G. Sebald is taken directly from "The Rings of Saturn." This is not a new text by Sebald.

The publishing trend of dissecting Browne's 1658 Discourses totally against the author's intentions persists in this New Directions edition. To understand fully Browne's artistic vision it is necessary to have access to and read 'The Garden of Cyrus' the diptych companion which counter-balances the themes, imagery and truths of 'Urn-Burial. This edition only gives one half of the coin, and lifts a short paragraph of W.G. Sebald's 'Rings of Saturn' to pass off as a new introduction.
