More fine Tyner music, in a big band context; unfortunately the live recording quality is rather indistinct. Everyone plays well, but I have to say the arrangements are not particularly memorable.

4.0 out of 5 stars McCoy Tyner--Big Band 27 Oct. 2011
By Burk Edwards - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
I first heard parts of this CD on Pandora, an internet radio. I chose "McCoy Tyner Big Band"
to be on my playlist. I had never heard McCoy Tyner record as a leader of a big band...... I
thought there would be a clash between Tyner's way of playing and a big band.

The first 2 or 3 times I heard selections from this CD, I was not paying attention to it. I was
focused on something else and the music was background music. I had noticed, though,
that the clash I expected did not occur....... and one of the songs, "Love Surrounds Us" (LSU),
sounded like something I might have heard Earth Wind and Fire do.

The next time I heard LSU, it was as if it slapped me on the head and said......."You need to
pay attention to this. There are things going on that you need to hear". I started noticing
that the instruments were "bouncing" around like Tyner's left hand. I thought "WOW!!!" and
gave the music my full attention. I fell in love with that version of LSU and I can't get enough
of it.

I searched a few places, locally, because I wanted to buy the CD. None in stock. I called
one of my friends....... a pianist, and asked him if he had heard this CD. He hadn't. I started
raving about the music. I told him......"I don't know who arranged this tune (LSU), but it
sure sounds like he was sitting inside McCoy's head when he wrote the arrangement. And
the band sounds the way McCoy plays the piano". My friend chuckled.

Later I found that Amazon.com had ONE of this CD in stock and I purchased it. When I
received it, the 1st thing I did was go to the liner notes. The very 1st sentence in the notes
is a quote from Tyner. "The way I like to think of the big band is as a piano--a magnified
piano." By the way, Tyner composed all songs and Jerry Hey wrote the arrangement for
"Love Surrounds Us".

Now, my review: On a 5 stars rating, I will give the CD 4 stars and the song "Love
Surrounds Us", 4.5 stars. The reason I rated it this way is because there were a few times
when, to me, it sounded as if the band wasn't sure of what to do. With that said, this CD
has become one of my all time favorites. One of the things I've always felt about Tyner's
music is that to fully feel his groove, you just can't sit and pat your feet. You gotta get up
and move to the grove of the music.....all that action going on in his left hand. The grove
you feel is NOT a shake-your-booty kind of grove. It's deeper than that. "Love Surrounds
Us" especially gets you up.

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent 30 Jun. 2010
By Bill Your 'Free Form FM Print DJ - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I was going to begin reviewing Uptown Downtown by saying "former John Coltrane piano player McCoy Tyner," before realizing that would be like identifying Lemmy from Moterhead as Hawkwind bass player Lemmy, or Courtney Cox as Alex's girlfriend on Family Ties: true but certainly not the main cake piece. Tyner was with 'Trane starting in 1961, and babies born when Tyner left at the end of 1965 have grandchildren now; Tyner has recorded consistently since his long ago apprentice role in the ABC Impulse! free jazz academy.

When he left, Tyner went back to hard bop and mainstream jazz, and has spent the last forty some years working with one permutation or the other.

You should check out as much Tyner solo work as possible. You will always find quality, but Uptown Downtown is exceptional. Unlike Dave Holland, who uses his big band to stretch forms in new directions, Tyner plays his hand straight. Most of the music on Uptown Downtown
is pretty conventional: these are all his tunes and work along the line of a polished, modern hard bop. The playing is fantastic by the whole band.

Of course the leader does amazing piano work. By now you know not to expect the chiming free playing of the long ago young Tyner working for master 'Trane, but Tyner does agile work around these restrained arrangements. Updown Downtown enjoys working as a slow complex boil rather than a boisterous attack.

Which is a favor to you: you will be listening to this album a lot more.

Surprisingly great big band album from one who usually lives in the smaller group venue. This is a powerful yet agile band with great solo talent.
