Praise for Kelly McGonigal and "The Willpower Instinct"
"Tired of the endless debate about whether man possesses free will or is predestined to lounge about gobbling Krispy Kreme donuts while watching TV? If you want action, not theory, "The Willpower Instinct" is the solution for the chronically slothful."
--" USA Today"
"Refreshingly easy to read and peppered with stories of people who have successfully used its methods, "The Willpower Instinct" is a new kind of self-help book. Using science to help explain the "why" and strategies for the "how," McGonigal has created a book that will appeal to those who want to lose a few pounds as well as those who are eager to understand why they just cannot seem to get through their to-do list. A must-read for anyone who wants to change how they live in both small and big ways."
--" Bookpage"
"A fun and readable survey of the field, bringing willpower wisdom out of the labs."
-- "TIME "magazine
""The Willpower Instinct" combines the braininess of a Malcolm Gladwell bestseller with the actual helpfulness of an Idiots' Guide to not being lazy. If you are trying to lose weight, train for an athletic event, become more successful at work, rid yourself of toxic habits...heck, if you're HUMAN, you need to read this book."
-- "Library Thing"
"This book has tremendous value for anyone interested in learning how to achieve their goals more effectively. McGonigal clearly breaks down a large body of relevant scientific research and its applications, and shows that awareness of the limits of willpower is crucial to our ability to exercise true self control."
-- Jeffrey M. Schwartz, M.D., author of the bestselling "Brain Lock"
"What a liberating book! Kelly McGonigal explains the scientific reality of willpower, exploding the myths that most of us believe. Stronger willpower--based on inspiring facts, not oppressive nonsense--is finally within everyone's reach."
-- Geoff Colvin, author of "Talent Is Overrated"

--Daniel H. Pink, author of "Drive" and "To Sell Is Human"

McGonigal brings scientific studies to life, makes her lessons tangible and provides fascinating take-aways for anyone who experiences stress -- which, let's face it, is all of us, often all the time."
--Charles Duhigg, MBA, author of "The Power of Habit"

I bought the Kindle edition of this revolutionary, well researched, very readable and inspirational book the moment it was published. I soon gave up using the highlighter as there was more yellow than white on the pages!

Dr McGonigal’s book tells us that the energy of stress can be turned into a positive resource – provided that you BELIEVE that it can. Kelly explains about the link between stress and meaning. The book gives very useful brief exercises for you to use to turn threats into challenges, and for working with your values. Always practical, and well explained, with personal stories and research references. Lots of help for carers. Kelly’s analysis is based on science rather than theory.

The book explains how to use “mindset mindfulness” to change your attitude towards stress. An example of a mindset switch (or “intervention”) is: Reflect on, and write about, the benefits of “Bigger Than Self” goals instead of “Self-Focused” goals. To benefit from the upside of stress, you need to understand the science – which Kelly explains fully. This enables you to believe that there are benefits from stress. Then you do an exercise that usually involves being aware, thinking and some writing. Finally you share what you’ve done, and why, with others.

The author explains that there are more stress responses than just, “fight-or-flight”. Such as the “Tend-and-Befriend ” response. Acts of kindness have powerful health and well-being benefits to the giver.

I’m developing a community website about “Resilience with Mindfulness”. So it’s important that I integrate Kelly’s ground-breaking ideas about the positive power of using the energy of stress with my previous thoughts about stress. I used to think that there was good stress and bad stress.

great book.. uses science and common sense to really give a different perspective.. I'm a cynic who 'suffers' from a lot of stress - but this book really changes your perspective. Its too soon to tell if I'll live longer as a result but i definitely feel it will make a difference.

This is my first time reviewing a book but I felt it must be done as the book is truly amazing. It gives the reader a deeper understanding to the benefits of stress and a new perspective on how we can all live meaningful lives. A life without stress is a life without purpose. Embrace stress and allow it to benefit you in all the ways it was designed to.

A really interesting read, took me a bit to get into it, but was the first time I have ever felt inspired enough to use the highlighter function on my kindle! Has been making me think ever since every time (it's pretty much daily) I see an article in stress. Has really affected how I think about it.
