5.0 out of 5 stars GOOD HISTORICAL REFERENCE 16 Aug. 2008
By Artisans Workspace - Published on
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
This is a very good reference for historical information about upholstery, what materials were used, etc. It even provides a photographic description detailing how upholstery was once constructed, including the use of dried grass as a base layer. It is diffiuclt to find any, let alone good, historical references, as most upholstery books in the market today, are basically "How-to" books. Needless to say, this is not one of those books.
3.0 out of 5 stars Cover Yourself Correctly 24 July 2009
By Henhouse Fox - Published on
Format: Hardcover
Another publication arising out of a conference on the subject; consisting of printed lectures or abstracts. If a historic interior professional or seriously interested amateur there is much to be learned. The ordinary laymen though might find the information of little use if not downright boring. The bibliography would be essential for a student of the field.
5.0 out of 5 stars Intriquing History 2 Sept. 2009
By N. Meehan - Published on

My grandfather was an apprentice for Irving & Casson in Boston at the turn of the century. This book provided me with additional insight as to why he was so fascinated with this business & why he continued in it for his entire life. Well-written & great pictures ~ timeless.
3.0 out of 5 stars Glad I bought it. 10 May 2013

However, I decided that it's for the craftsman, not me. But I enjoyed reading it. Learned a lot, on chairs I don't need to completely re-do. But some basic things, they glossed over.

A thorough discussion of the scholarship at that time combined with practical examples. I do wonder what changes in the understanding have occurred since????
