About the Author
Scott Mueller is the president of Mueller Technical Research (MTR), an international research and corporate training firm. Since 1982, MTR has produced the industry’s most in-depth, accurate, and effective seminars, books, articles, videos, and FAQs covering PC hardware and data recovery. MTR maintains a client list that includes Fortune 500 companies, the U.S. and foreign governments, major software and hardware corporations, as well as PC enthusiasts and entrepreneurs. Scott’s seminars have been presented to several thousands of PC support professionals throughout the world.
Scott personally teaches seminars nationwide covering all aspects of PC hardware (including troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, and upgrade), A+ Certification, and data recovery/forensics. He has a knack for making technical topics not only understandable, but entertaining; his classes are never boring! If you have 10 or more people to train, Scott can design and present a custom seminar for your organization.
Although he has taught classes virtually nonstop since 1982, Scott is best known as the author of the longest-running, most popular, and most comprehensive PC hardware book in the world, Upgrading and Repairing PCs, which has become the core of an entire series of books, including Upgrading and Repairing PCs, Upgrading and Repairing Laptops, and Upgrading and Repairing Windows.
Scott’s premiere work, Upgrading and Repairing PCs, has sold well over two million copies, making it by far the most popular and longest-running PC hardware book on the market today. Scott has been featured in Forbes magazine and has written several articles for PC World magazine, Maximum PC magazine, the Scott Mueller Forum, various computer and automotive newsletters, and the Upgrading and Repairing PCs website.

This is an excellent book that covers all aspects of PC History, Upgrading and Repair, I have purchased this book for several years and is invaluable for any person serious about the workings of their computer.
It is a big book and absolutely worth the money, also the included DVD covers many video tutorials
The book also includes a code to access the Scott Mueller forum, worth the price of the book on it's own. Scott personally replies to the posts on that forum providing immediate access to an expert, indeed many of the forum members are Computer people themselves.
The book is fully up to date including information on the latest S1156 processor but also goes back to cover the very first Processors.
You won't be disappointed :)
The chapters cover all the main components of a PC - processor, memory, hard drives, optical drives, BIOS, motherboards, power supplies etc... and there is a very useful chapter on building your own computer. The glossary at the end is comprehensive to say the least, and provides information on the seemingly endless abbreviations used in the computer industry. I would regard myself as a very competent computer user - I've been using them for many years including IBM PC's, Macs and UNIX and a bit of programming here and there, I use computers every day at work and home, yet every time I need to find something out - whether for work, or just curiosity, this book always seems to have the answers, I can't praise it more - highly recommended.
Very up to date (Oct 04) - SATA-II, Athlon FX, P4 EE etc.
Each chapter describes how the technology has developed (eg hard drives, processors, memory) and then gives technical info on each iteration of the hardware. Troubleshooting tips are provided.
The book describes the history of PC's, their development right through to modern day. There is a great section on system checking to enable you to diagnose computer problems and fix your PC yourself. The depth of the book is a testimony to Scott's expertise. Nevertheless the entire book is interesting and accessible to the novice (like me) or Pro and its easy to dip into a section and read the whole chapter fairly effortlessly. For example there is a brilliant explanation about how hard drives work.
This edition updates with i5 and i7, it's therefore a great time to pick up the latest edition.
The last edition has helped helped me fix several computers and build two more. The knowledge I have picked up reading these is about to be used to build my next rig (i5). I am delighted to be first to give this new edition 5 stars.
All the best Pete
