Product Description

When painter and decorator Arthur Hoyle (Gary Olsen), an impassioned rugby league fan and former professional player, hears corrupt manager Reg Walsh (Tony Slattery) boasting about his team, the Cobblers, Arthur bets his life savings that he can train up a side to beat them. Unfortunately, the team Reg chooses for him are the Wheatsheaf Arms, who cannot even field a full side. Terrified of his wife Doreen discovering his gamble, Arthur asks gym owner Hazel Scott (Samantha Janus) to help him whip the Wheatsheafers into shape in time to beat Reg's team.

"Up 'n' Under" is a modern day tale of David and Goliath as local team "The Wheatsheaf Arms" lock battle with "The Cobblers". It charts the woeful performances of a poor and dispirited team of ametuer rugby players who always lose but they must beat a top team to win a bet made by their coach Arthur. Enter a gym owner/fitness instructor and keen rugby fan in the shapely form of Hazel Scott (really well played by Samantha Womack), who almost single-handedly turns around their self-belief and fitness levels. Shades of "Brassed Off" and "The Full Monty" follow the characters on their journey throughout the film and it has more on offer than just a few very funny moments. Neil Morrissey, Gary Olsen and Tony Slattery all put in good performances but for me it is the local radio sports presenter Ray Mason (Griff Rhys-Jones) who almost steals the show with his great, almost underwhelming match reports. The well known and documented 'shower scene' with Steve looking for Hazel seemed at first a little out of place with the style of the rest of the film. I am not saying it was put in to solely to increase male interest in the product and increase sales figures. For what we have here is Steve's over inflated male ego and over rated 'pulling power' being put firmly into place by Hazel. So the scene is somewhat justified by being used to good effect when Hazel gives a clear message to his unwanted amorous advances. Now you don't have to be a rugby fan or sports follower for that matter to enjoy this tale. It's a good, solid, British Comedy drama that will have you rooting for the under dogs. A little fanciful and unrealistic in places, as many successful comedies usually are, but it's well worth viewing.Read more ›

A very enjoyable feel good comedy with a rugby league seven a side background. John Godber has adapted his play for the cinema and gives us some astute and hilarious observations on class and masculinity in the north of England. Gary Olsen, as the former Rugby league player, heads an excellent cast and even Samantha Janus, as the gym owner, fits in surprisingly well. Not a film for the rugby connoisseur, but just the job for a good evening's viewing with a couple of pints.

Arthur Hoyle (the late Gary Olsen) foolishly accepts a bet from the Manager of the leading, and most brutal, amateur Rugby League sides that he could train any team to beat them in an upcoming local 7 a-side comptetition. His rival (Tony Slattery) nominates The Wheatsheaf and so Arthur's problems begin.
To get his team of mishapen failures into shape, they would sooner spend time in the pub than practice, he enlists the help of local gym owner Hazel Scott (Samantha Janus) as they embark on a Rocky style fitness regime.
It's a classic David v Goliath story as our less than magnificent seven fall at almost every hurdle in the lead up to the big game.
There's a couple of great cameo performances from Griff Rhys-Jones as the local sports reporter and Brian Glover as Arthur's father-in-law and yes it has Samantha Janus in THAT scene.
Unfortunately there are no extras, unless you count the mini-poster insert which has the chapter details.

I remember seeing this film at the cinema some years ago and enjoyed it immensely. I was so very pleased when I saw it was availble on DVD whilst looking for presents on Oxford Street. You often read cynical reviews of British movies but I think this was a marvellous film and recommend it with no reservations.

Being a fan of Rugby League I had to say that it was great to watch a cracking Rugby League film. It had everything - Humour, Neil Morrisey and even some great rugby skills. Oh and for all you Saints fans - the one and only Adam Foggerty!!!! What more could you ask for.
A must see and a must have! Buy it! You wont be sorry!

I'm not a rugby buff, but I thought this was a hilarious romp of a movie. Great cast and Sam Janus is gorgeous. Why oh why have we had to wait so long for this great British comedy to come out in DVD.

This film is a comedy which means that you dont take the rugby scenes or the rules of rugby etc seriously, its about the good winning the battle against bad, the soundtrack is excellent and the down to earth attitude of the actors is great, especially the part of the commentator which is played by Gryff Rhys Jones, and Neil Morrissey is great.

Very watchable and funny film
