This is the 3rd in the Lester Family Saga. I have read the previous two - and loved both of them. I was a little worried that the standard would possibly drop a bit. But I loved this one too - possibly even more than the others! Harry Lester is a completely confirmed rake, and has absolutely no intention of getting married. His older brother has just got engaged - having decided that it was time he got a wife and leave his wild days behind him. The Duke who married their sister was one of their rakeish friends, who had to look for a wife to produce an heir. But Harry was a second son, with no title or major estate to hand on, and definitely had no intention of changing his life. However, when he rescued widow Mrs. Lucinda Babbacombe from an overturned carriage while on his way to the races at Newmarket, his life was about to change!

Both hero and heroine are just my kind of regency romantics. A capable, charming young woman in her late 20s, Lucinda will not be browbeaten. Harry, charming but totally unwilling to commit in the smallest degree, feels obliged to protect her from the 'young bloods', bucks and rakes who visit Newmarket in Race Week - even though she is convinced that she is quite capable of managing her business dealings without his somewhat arrogant prescence. It is a good length book so there is plenty of space to cover the unfolding romance and also to incorporate the money-strapped heir to her late husband's estate - who, to his horror and surprise, found that the personal wealth his uncle had accrued from business dealings had not being entailed and had been left to Lucinda and her young stepdaughter. This leads to nepharious go-ings on and adds to the story.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes Regency Romances of the more superior kind.

This book is one of her earlier works and much better. This and The reasons for Marriage are my favourite of her books. I have read many of the newer ones - the Cynster series thinking she would come back to form but if I am going to read Ms Laurens I would rather reread her early works.

Not as good as some of her older stories but I still enjoyed it. Love her books. Was given this one as a gift. Plenty of people will be reading it as we always pass our books onto each other.

Came on time & well packaged. An author worth giving a try

Loved this book & completely took me by surprise as both protagonists held their own to the very end. The unusual twist to the story was centred on how the hero goes about proving to the heroine that he loved her through different words & actions without actually proclaiming his feelings until the end. Of course by then both the reader & she beleive it whole heartedly. There are the outside characters that also build the layers to this wonderful story with a touch of humour, sadness & of course romance. One of SL's best works. Highly recommended.

Another very enjoyable read, set in Regency period England. The descriptions of all the characters, social conventions and clothing are so delightfully accurate. Just waiting for the next one.
