About the Author

Catherine Steadman is an actress and writer based in North London. She is known for her roles in Downton Abbey and Tutankhamun, starring alongside Sam Neill, as well as shows including Breathless, The Inbetweeners, The Tudors, and Fresh Meat. In 2017 Catherine will feature in political thriller Fearless and new BBC comedy Bucket. She also has appeared on stage in the West End including Oppenheimer for the RSC, for which she was nominated for a 2016 Laurence Olivier Award.

Surprisingly Disappointing

This novel had all the expectations of Steadman's first novel 'Something in the Water' which was rightly crtitically acclaimed; however I personally found this book quite tedious in parts. It was a good opening and the mystery behind 'Mr Nobody' and indeed the lead character Emma was intriguing but three quarters of the way through it started to get a little bogged down with 'I need to scratch my head inplausible facts'. I felt very delated at the end for some reason, maybe a twist in the tale ie Emma's father being still alive would have just hitched it up a bit from run of the mill. Without giving away too many spoilers I also found the temendously long 'fight/pursuit' scene between two of the book's main characters a bit long winded. Fans of Steadman wuld probably revel in giving this book a go but unfortunately not one for me.

The plot concept behind this was very clever and did not fall into the usual ideas that are churned out by many authors, at the moment. In fact, I’ve not read a book lately with such an interesting perpetrator. Also, the knowledge of brain problems, difficulties, diagnosis etc was very good or it appeared to be (well beyond my medical knowledge and maybe a brain specialist would know whether the facts were correct!)
Whilst the first two thirds of the storyline were captivating, unfortunately, the last third was disappointing, particularly the build up towards the finale. This involved a rather unbelievable ‘sort of chase’.
There are two puzzle threads in the plot and information for both are drip fed to the reader.
A man is found on a beach in Norfolk. He has completely lost his memory and hasn’t a clue who he is or how he got to the beach. He’s hospitalised and Dr Emma Lewis, a competent neuropsychiatrist, with expertise in this type of infliction, is seconded from London to diagnose and treat the man. Emma has her own difficult past and her childhood home was a few miles from the beach. She is one of the ‘thread characters’. The man, who is eventually named Mathew-instead of Mr Nobody, is the second ‘thread character’. ‘Mathew’ is of interest to different organisations- immigration, military, police etc. as attempts to identify him gain momentum.
If not for the last part of this book, it would be a five star read. However I drop stars for the last part.

Having really enjoyed Catherine Steadman's first novel Something in the Water, I was excited to pick this one up - and I wasn't disappointed. It was clever and well plotted, with a fascinating insight into how the marvellous human brain works. The suspense kept me gripped, with big reveals coming at just the right time. I didn't think it was slow as other reviewers have mentioned. I like Catherine's writing style and the way she builds characters, and I enjoyed how torn I felt over the man who is Mr Nobody right until the end.
I was frustrated by the change in perspective half way through some of the chapters, especially as the chapters are headed to show who is speaking. There were quite a few typos as well, the first on page 2, which always bugs me. Nevertheless, I'd definitely recommend My Nobody.

Like other reviewers I found the plot concept original and interesting. I was also impressed by the medical and psychiatric knowledge which indicated in-depth research. However, I didn't relate to the introspection and internal dialogue of the main character Emma which I tended to skip after a while. And also like other reviewers I thought the concluding chapters of chase, capture and escape overdone. The resolution of the plot was clever but somehow disappointing. That said, I'd definitely read another book by Catherine Steadman.
