...good form, Ms Ihle, and I'm sorry to say, not a very good read. I can't fathom what made her post 'reviews' of her book herself, but anyway, to the book in hand:

I picked this up thinking I'd get a tale a la vintage Connie Mason/Nan Ryan/Linda Howard, full of passionate, prickly, independent female and arrogant, Alpha male, but I only lasted until around 41% of the tale before giving up. Why? Because it was utterly boring, and had an incredibly cold, selfish and unlikeable female lead, and because all the characters had issues with hygiene - a bugbear of mine, sorry.

Yes, I got that Josie had been dumped in a brothel by her stepfather, but she made it clear that in a way, she was kind of relieved not to be slaving for them, and she never ever wanted to cook/clean/mend/wash or the likes ever again. She didn't miss him or any of her stepbrothers, no, not one whit. She came across as a stone-cold bitch, pardon the expression, even more so when asked to tend to the injured Daniel, who'd broken his leg and she treated him with a total lack of compassion.

And, as for Daniel, well, the reader gets treated to a scene where he's having a pee, gets surprised and then we're told that he's done it on his feet and his clothes and will need a wash and change, but he seemingly forgets and next thing he's on his bed. Plus, we get the added treat of a slop bucket, complete with smell, that needs emptying and that has sat around for days. TMI!!! Why did we need any of this?

And, the abductor, Long Belly? Well, whaddya know, 100% Cheyenne, but he speaks perfect English with Daniel and Josie and Sissy (Josie's friend who's been abducted too), yet he supposedly doesn't know how a brothel works, but he does know to chuck his axe around when he doesn't get his way.

Main Character = unlovable. Rude to her step child nasty about her own impending baby and just genuinely mean and selfish. I expected better due to the reviews but obviously I was wrong.

I've never read this author before, but really enjoyed this book. It was realistic, filled with a very real sense of what it must have been like to live during the trying times in which our nation was built. I loved Josie's fighting spirit and her soft side, which she struggled to hide, and laughed as the hunky Daniel tried to bring that softness to the forefront. I will definitely be reading more of Ihle's works.
