I finished The Unrequited 2 weeks ago and am still reeling!
This book is unlike anything I have read before, it hit me deep in the feels. I literally could not put it down.
It was a raw, deeply emotional, intense rollercoaster ride that I didn't want to get off! And the intimate scenes are off the charts hot! Seriously, read this book alone. It is pure FILTH.
Let's talk about Layla and Thomas. Layla is fierce. Heartbroken but so fierce. She has this dark soul that just draws you in and keeps you there. She has an obsessive nature, deals with everything so full on and takes it all so hard. She craves pain and hurt and sadness because she believes it's all she deserves. She lets herself be used and accepts rejection as the norm. This only makes her all the more endearing to the reader, in my opinion.
Thomas. Wow. He is tortured, so damaged and it shows in his personality, he's just filled with hate. Thomas and Layla are drawn to each other, I think this is to fill the voids they both have. They sort of complete each other. He treats her so badly because he can't deal with the instant and intense pull he has toward her. He tries to push her away, resulting in the opposite effect. There's an animalistic need he has for her that he can't explain and it consumes them both.
I love Saffron's writing so much, it has a dark quality to it which is so appealing. She doesn't conform to the ideal of love, she writes about the painful side of it, the hurt and the bits no-one talks about or deals with. But at the same time setting the scene for the perfect love story.
I knew from the first page that I loved this book and was hooked immediately. Five stars just doesn't cut it, if I could I would give it 10. 10 perfect purple stars!!
This book is raw, passionate and full of angst. The book was poetic, the writing impeccable and consuming, the characters perfect albeit flawed in many ways, both hurting from the past they are trying to make amends for. Both suffering from unrequited love.
Layla and Thomas are two phenomenal characters to read. They find comfort in each other but in different ways, damning the consequences their pull is like a giant magnet and is written so well I couldn't tear my eyes away. It starts off slowly building to a crescendo of feelings that slowly crawls under you skin taking over your whole body, your mind, your heart.
Thomas is an incredible man. He has so many layers that slowly get to be peeled back in this book and I loved him so much I can't express my feelings for him enough. He is arrogant, rude, standoffish, sarcastic, has a dirty mouth ( which I swooned over) but underneath it all his heart is as big as the moon, always thinking of others and trying to do the right thing by everyone. There were many times I disliked him immensely, then times I loved him so much my chest ached thinking about him. I was jealous of Layla, jealous of a fictional character; was I going crazy, this book makes your head spin with many unanswered questions at first.
Layla, is a complicated young lady that made a big mistake and has kept paying for it. She has lost the support of her friends and family and is very much alone. I liked Layla, one minute she was this needy young girl who didn't really know her own mindset and the next she was this sultry erotic sexually demanding woman who knew exactly what she wanted/ needed and boy did she take it !! A complex character to understand at first but she really did grow on me enormously and I did feel her pain but not as much as Thomas - this beautiful complex creature stole the whole book in my opinion. He is one of those characters that you know you will never ever forget. Together their chemistry was potent and extreme, sensual and erotic and made me want to climb Thomas like a monkey, it was so intense that I wanted what they had, so wonderfully captured in the pages and beautifully written.
All in all this book just blew me away and is an absolute MUST read ---
“God...what are we doing?” I pant into his shirt.
“The wrongest thing we’ve ever done,” he says, repeating my words.
AMEN TO THAT !!!
