Product description

Review

"I expected more of a reaction the first time I hit her" ... The No 1 bestselling story of the making of a sociopath that has been compared to Gone Girl (From the Publisher's Description)

Compelling, clever and dark, unlike any other psychological thriller you will have read before ... you'll gobble it up in one go (Heat Magazine)

The compulsion to continue reading never wanes ... a persistently satisfying read. (Sunday Times)

Truly excellent, beautifully written ... strongly recommended (Sophie Hannah)

A page-turning, one-sitting read from a brand new master of psychological suspense (Sunday Independent)

About the Author

Before becoming a full-time writer Liz Nugent worked in Irish film, theatre and television. In 2014 her first novel, Unravelling Oliver, was a Number One bestseller and won the Crime Fiction Prize in the 2014 Irish Book Awards. Her second novel, Lying in Wait, went straight to Number One in the Irish bestseller charts, remained there for nearly two months and won her a second IBA. She lives in Dublin with her husband.

It is a Hell of an achievement to have your titular 'hero' punch his wife in the first paragraph, and to succeed in persuading a reader to invest time in 'unravelling' him. Nugent succeeds through quality of writing, depth of character and using a change of narrative voice in a way that is genuinely interesting rather than just a structural gimmick. This is a thin novel, but the brevity is refreshing brief, with not a page wasted.

One gripe - the cover of this book is awful. "She knew everything about him... but the truth." Oliver's wife knows absolutely nothing about him, so they must have taken that lazy, B movie, line from somewhere else. And "the woman lying on the floor as incentive to buy a book" is just horrible. Shame on the once-mighty house of Penguin.

This is one of the best books I've read in recent times. It's complex (but deceptively simple in the early chapters), compelling and quite original in both it's telling and storyline.
It opens dramatically, involving a savage assault by Oliver on Alice. He tells the reader in a somewhat self-serving way of what led to the assault and he details the assault itself.
Numerous characters in their lives then relate, from their own perspective, their involvement with the novel's two main protagonists, husband and wife, Oliver and Alice, and this is the key to creating an intriguing tale.
In real life, none of us ever has the complete story, and Liz Nugent cleverly uses that fact to slowly unfold her story in layers - most readers will leap to conclusions early on, only to have those challenged as new characters reveal new aspects to the lives and history of Oliver and Alice's complicated life.
Rivetting!

This book really kept me in suspense. I am ashamed to say I had not heard of Liz Nugent until I read this book and I loved it! The story is in bits and pieces so you find out little bits as you go along, with chapters from different characters. I love this style, it really had me hooked! I had a love/hate relationship with the main character; Oliver; until the end, then it was definitely more hate than love!

Well written and intricate the passing of the story between the various characters really hampered my enjoyment. Depressing without a clear voice to identify with largely I found this hard work!

Spotted this book months ago but because of the price put it on wish list and forgot about till now when it's much cheaper. Oliver is not the nicest of characters but by the end you feel just a little bit sorry for him. R e ally good book throughout told over the years by different friends and lovers leading you to understand why he was oliver

I really enjoyed reading Unravelling Oliver. I was hooked from the start, & enjoyed how the story played out through the eyes of not just Oliver, but those that knew him

Pretty standard thriller; there's some momentum, the writing isn't awful and there are one or two engaging characters.
