Some very peculiar aliens in the story, including the Pan of Hamgee, who, despite literally having eyes in the back of his head, didn't manage to avoid walking head-long into trouble. Interesting trouble, and I now want to find out if he manages to pull himself out of, or further into the quagmire of problems he's just sunk himself into.
Great read, a character, universe and series worth checking out. I am!
This was a free read I found via an author promo. Nice little gem!
I liked the style and I find myself interested to know more about the back story of both the central characters in this very short read. Clearly, there is a whole new universe out there to be explored in the original which inspired this story. What I don't like is when something is packaged to look like something else. Had this been marketed as a sampler or an introduction or even a teaser then it may have garnered a star or two more.
You'll breeze through it in under 20 mins and as it's free it might be a good investment to test the waters of MT McGuires work, so to speak. Just don't expect too much from this particular offering.
I do like her style of writing and you will certainly get a flavour of the Trilogy if you read this. If you have read the two available books, it's still worth reading this for the backstory of The Pan and Big Merv's first meeting. I rather like the encounter with the street-wise Old Lady too! Nice one.
If you've read Few Are Chosen (The K'Barthan Trilogy) you'll enjoy this brief jaunt through the personal history of two of its main characters. Telling the tale of the first time the Pan of Hamgee crosses paths with Big Merv, the strangely orange gangster who strikes fear and trembling into all and sundry, it serves as a nice introduction to their world. If you haven't but liked this, be aware there are a whole gamut of amusing eccentrics that you haven't met yet... (Slightly sad that Gladys and Ada never quite got a walk-on though!)
An quick and easy read, including a really bad joke that made me laugh out loud on the train.
Recommended as a taster for the series, or a catch-up on how-it-all-began for those who have read one or more of the series.
This is an incredible short prequel and can be read quite quickly. It was fairly engaging but didn't do a lot for me - I think I would need to read something longer to know if I liked the author's style.
so yes, I read it backwards as well, and I dont regret that because having got to know The Pan and Big Merv it was just so nice to see them again- if only too briefly!
After this little introduction to The Pan's world its straight into an adventure with the next book.
Really, an excellent series of books. I am looking forwards to the publication of the next one.
