Swiftly chasing their greatest hits retrospective, Uni-Verse-City shows how Arqa retain their relevance in the global fusion arena. The two decades-plus longevity of this sprawling collective marks the Suns out as true pioneers of Asian dubbery and ethnographic psychedelia. Deep bassman Michael Wadada is their eternal figurehead, but Kadir Durvesh and N Magriel are also firmly ensconced sidemen, playing shehnai (reed flute) and sarangi (a box-like bowed instrument, with no shortage of sympathetic strings). Wadada also continues his collaboration with Hungary's Arqa equivalent, Laszlo Hortobagyi & The Gayan Uttejak Orchestra, these sessions also recorded in their Budapest studio. The musical template is made up from Indian raga rules, but heavily interfered with by electronic tomfoolery. Geshela Ngaqang Sherap's meditational chants accumulate low tones, surrounded by liquid sarangi flourishes and nasally piercing shenai trills. All tracks are fully extended, the opening "Bhairagi Bardo" swirling around in the spiritual ether until, four minutes in, Wadada's brutally bloated dub bass splits its sphincter. Then, "Gawoti-Thanam" enters abstract realms, swathed in atmospheric drones and groans, while "El-Horto-Ang" is the album's wild centrepiece, a freak-out odyssey oddity, disjointed and unpredictable, churning up a miasma of oil-and-water samples. --Martin Longley

5.0 out of 5 stars wadada at his best albsolutelly dub slammin 29 May 2005
By yajdubuddah - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
alright yall here it is the best suns of arqa album yet and one of the best eastern dub albums ever. wadada tears it up with this dub slamma(bass, slide guitar+voice) with help from geshela sherap (chants), kadir durvesh (shenai), n. magriel (sarangi), and durga dugle( tabla+drums) and all other instrument by the gayan uttejak orchestra. And my man youth ( from the dub trees album with simon pinford from hallucinogen, shpongle & younger brother) remixin 3+4+7+8, the brains behind the remixez of suns album juggernaut dub. I love albums like this with songs that say dub in them and the whole album is dub slammin and those arent and different. This is really smooth dub beautifly orchestrated sarangi which is an eastern violin not much different, tabla with tamboura and various eastern horns and guitars mixed with excellent dub bass keyboard electronics and electric drums. Their isnt verry much singin except 1 song and the other is slight chants. for any fans of dub at all this is the one to check out to real into different breeds of dubnicity. This truelly is universe city
any fand of bill laswell, tranglobal underground, temple of sound, asian dub foundation, gayan uttejak, azzddine, adrian sherwood, mad professor and classic dub headz
