HASH(0x9005a0cc) out of 5 stars Unusual Approach to Military History, but it Works! 18 Mar. 2011
By mastermindquiet - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
This is a bit of an odd book. It consists of an introduction and fourteen chapters, each one a fictionalized account of a soldier from a variety of time periods, from the Roman invasion of Britain to a British paratrooper trapped at Arnhem. The chapters are fiction but are based on actual military operations, with most details drawn from non-fiction histories. The fictional primary players are introduced as composite characters to allow the reader to understand what it was like for the grunt solider of the different eras. It's actually surprisingly good. The stories flow well, are interesting and informative. Each chapter has a color plate depicting the primary character with an emphasis on his equipment and dress. This is an excellent book for the more casual military reader.

HASH(0x8ceabd14) out of 5 stars It's always nice to get more than you expect 19 April 2013

The book is a very well written collection of stories describing a soldiers life in different times and places. Some are what you would expect- the World Wars for instance. Some are refreshingly different as the Swiss levies in the Middle Ages.

Additionally I find the seller is conservative in classifying the condition of the volume. It was in better condition than I expected.
