4.0 out of 5 stars Buy two, Give one to a friend 30 July 2011
By Gaylen Halbert - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
At 30 minutes,Union Town is actually an EP. Tom Morello's two previous releases [as The Night Watchman]are full album length. My favorite of all three is Fabled City.. Union Town should be handed out by sponsors of any rally or event seeking justice for the increasingly disenfranchised labor class in our country. I could not imagine appreciating the song 16 Tons [remember Tennessee Ernie], but Tom gave it a fresh authority and timeliness. Also the song Which Side Are You On? worked just fine for me----Natalie Merchant does a beautiful cover of the same song on her album House Carpenters Daughter. All in all Union Town is a welcome musical statement and I applaud Tom Morello for his effort.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Songs of for and by the Common Man 21 July 2011
By J. Hetrick - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
While this is musically quite different from what one might expect from a member of the shredtastic Rage Against the Machine, the unapologetic liberal ideology makes the content of these new songs seem both familiar and natural for Tome Morello. In this new Nightwatchman EP, Morello plays renditions of songs that rose from the American labor movement as well as a few originals and it all combines together into a great mini-collection of pro-union jams. Fans of Morello's other projects should know that there is a significant amount of piano and group vocals backing Morello's performances, but this difference is one that fits the songs and is enjoyable. Two of my personal favorites are the final song, "Union Song", which was performed live at the state capitol protests in Madison, Wisconsin earlier this year, and of course, the cover of Woodie Guthrie's "This Land". I wouldn't hesitate to buy this if you're a RATM, or Morello fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Should be a part of every US History course in high schools and colleges 24 Sept. 2011

A great overview of songs important to the history of the U.S. Labor Movement...and a couple of Morello songs that will hopefully be important to its future. It would be great if more high school and intro to U.S. History college teachers would use this in their classes. It would be even better if a proper overview of history of the labor movement were included in those classes as well. The role of song has long been important to the history of working class persons. Tom Morello's interpretations of labor movement classics would help younger students better understand how they fit into this vital movement today.

If you've come this far and are still interested, I think Phillip Dray's history of the labor movement and Ed Cray's biography of Woody Guthrie would add to your interest in this collection of songs. Give it to your children and grandchildren as a holiday (especially Labor Day) or birthday gift.
5.0 out of 5 stars Morello Rocks 22 Sept. 2012

I am a person who missed Rage Against the Machine completely! I saw Tom Morello interviewed on Moyers & Company after he had been in Madison Wisconsin to perform during the protests at the Capitol in 2011. His CD absolutely blew me away, both for the union "old-standards" such as "Which Side Are You On?" and original songs such as "Union Town" and "Union Song" (recorded live in Madison during the 2011 occupation of the Capitol). Morello has a marvelous voice that is strong and clear from bass to baritone. He is a fabulous songwriter and a great supporter of workers. I highly recommend this album and plan to acquire others (including Rage Against the Machine).

4.0 out of 5 stars Thank You Tom Morello! 8 Nov. 2011

Nothing 'spectacular', just a very solid collection of PRO working class, PRO union, PRO people really, songs. Folks, this is not Rage, this is not Audioslave, but this IS good. I enjoyed it, think you will too.

And if you get a chance to see him touring, doing his Nightwatchman thing: Go.
