This is the album I listened to when I heard the news of Marc Bolan's death. I've always had a slight preference for Tyrannosaurus Rex over T Rex, and it's on this album that Tyrannosaurus Rex gave us their most beautiful music.
The acoustic guitar, bongos and children's instruments of the first two albums are here, but the addition of the occasional piano and organ expand the sound way beyond what Tyrannosaurus Rex had done before. Similarly, Marc Bolan's lyrics and melodies are more ambitious than before. Though on subsequent albums he achieved similar success with melody, he never matched the quality of lyrics to be found on this album.
It's impossible to talk in terms of stand-out tracks: that implies that there are duds, and there simply aren't any. Even the children's story that John Peel is now so embarrassed about fits and makes sense in its context.
The only way the album could have been improved would be by the inclusion of the single "Pewter Suitor" and the out-take "Once upon the Seas of Abyssinia".

As a new Trex fan I ordered 5 of them, here. Unicorn is extraordinary free, dreaming, creative, non-electric but put you into another world. It is quite timeless, not a 60album, not a 70album, but above. The tunes are amazingly simple in it's constuction and therefore very strong and sublime and not boring, because there are depths in Unicorn, so these simple tunes grow by listening. Of the 5 CDs I bought, this is the best, The others were from 68, 70, 71. The 70-73 albums are supposed to be better, because of the single-hits. But surely Unicorn is more creative, poetic and personal. Unicorn will not change your life, but watch your feelings and inner freedom while listening to this album.

well, 'Unicorn' is the sound of Marc Bolan moving away from the happy innocent days of 'My People Were Fair...' & 'Prophets Seers & Sages' towards the more ominous anxiety-ridden thoughts of the album following "Unicorn" - 'T-Rex. the single 'King Of the Rumbling Spires' was the true work of genius but this album somehow as a whole takes you even further in...Bolan knew it - life is very short, try to enjoy it.
