Product description

Amazon Review

Fans of Lemony Snicket and newcomers to his gleefully ghastly Series of Unfortunate Events will be elated to discover this boxed gift set of the first four books in hardcover: The Bad Beginning, The Reptile Room, The Wide Window and The Miserable Mill. While it's true that the events that unfold in Snicket's novels are bleak, and things never turn out as you'd hope, these delightful, funny, linguistically playful books are reminiscent of Roald Dahl, Charles Dickens and Edward Gorey. After they get their paws on this boxed set, there is no question that young readers will want to read the continuing unlucky adventures of the three Baudelaire orphans. (ages 9 and older) --Karin Snelson, Amazon.com

My 10-year old daughter loves these books. She's totally gleeful about the dark and rather gothic tales, the perfect antidote to twee and maudlin stories usually given to kids. The heroes are destined to be in perpetual torment, but to escape the clutches of the evil Count Olaf in the nick of time. Good and evil are forever in the throes of violent opposition.
As such, this is gloriously old-fashioned entertainment and none the worse for that. A moral subtext in a warped tribute to the Victorian tradition, maybe - be sure your sins will find you out! In fact, all the characters in these books are steeped in characteristics that define their behaviour. Some are arbitrarily punished for their deficiencies, but Olaf lives on, a Dick Dastardly in perpetual pursuit of the elusive Baudelaire fortune but never quite able to overcome the miraculous siblings.
There is so much to enjoy here - read and be happy!

Be prepared to shell out for all the subsequent volumes though! Once they get hooked there's no stopping them! They are very nice hardback books and well worth keeping. They are released here a few months after the release in the USA but don't be tempted to get from there as they are not as nice editions, be patient! My son has read all the books twice and has really enjoyed them. A very worthy purchase.

Right what to say about this book apart from BUY IT, it is all about orphans who have alot of bad things happen to them (such as murder). I really loved this book but i think that 8 year olds or under might have to be supervised by an adult the first time they read it, as some of the material is very frightening and at time rather gruesome.
But if u like good gripping literature that keeps u on the edge of your seat through out i suggest that YOU BUY THIS BOOK NOW!!!

Looks as if they are correct. This is a great three-book starter set for the series. Lemony Snicket has made a great series of books for those people that can’t stand everything being sweetness and light. In the process we learn many lessons in life from grammar to etiquette. Similar to Rocky and Bullwinkle there is something for everyone at any age.
It would be wise to buy this three book set as you will be hooked on the story from the beginning and have all three books finished before you have a chance to buy the forth.
Coming in a case allows you to set the books up on the shelf without needing any supporting books or book ends.
I will not go through the contents of the books, as you will get a better idea of what you are purchasing from the individual reviews. However the books included in this set are “The Bad Beginning,” “ The Reptile Room,” and “The Wide Window.” Be sure to look for my individual reviews of each book. In each you will se the pattern that makes this series popular and maybe learn a little something on the side.
