From the blurb, you would be mistaken in thinking you had any idea where this story was going because the author certainly keeps the best bits under wraps and as I wound my way through the story I couldn’t help but wonder what was going to come next. This was a meticulous creation that cleverly built the anticipation of events and harnessed my engagement with the characters and resulted in the fact that I effectively felt as if I was reading it while precariously perched on the very edge of my seat.
From the beginning, there was an affinity with the characters, whether that was because of the blurb and the fact that I thought I had the gist of what was to come or whether it was down to the fact that this was not a hit and run sort of story, I am not too sure. This story does nothing fast, it is a real grower, it takes years to show its true colours and rightly so. The author piled the depth of the story on layer by layer, taking her time to lay the groundwork and giving just enough initial detail of their backstory that when it all came into play the pieces quickly fell into place.
This is James and Cora story and it is one that doesn’t just dwell on the fact that they are a couple that have a strength that is tested in a way that many would never wish to face, nope, this lifts the corners of their life and peeks under the surface to get at the reality of what it is like to be them, to face the obstacles that they have before them and to examine what part their past actions have played in them being where they are now, accountability in its many guises come into play and it isn’t all one sided!.
Is the love they share enough…well that is the question and I had my fingers crossed that they were strong enough to survive the ride but that didn’t mean that it was going to easy, far from it I just hoped that they had what it took to stick together.
There wasn’t as much angst in the story as I had anticipated but there were plenty of secrets to be divulged, no matter how much some may have preferred them to have remained hidden.
There were some fabulous secondary characters, who much like in real life were able to support them, but the reality of their situation was primarily a solo venture, as two souls fought to keep their status quo, to hold on to their relationship and to acknowledge a love that they hope would be unbreakable.
This was a great read, with a strong emotional pull but that rings the bell for love, life and friendship.
Walls did such a wonderful job developing her characters. She gave them a complexity and depth that made the book even better. Cora is one of those magical characters that you just want to be friends with. She not only charmed the characters in the book, but she charmed me. When she met James, he knew she would change his life for the better.
“With Cora in my arms and the ocean lapping at our feet, my heart fell, our souls collided, and I’d found the love of my life.” ~James
Cora softened his hard edges, and she got him to accept people he never thought he would ever be around. For instance, he finds himself eating lunch with people he had known for years but never spoken to. She was all goodness. James wanted to be a better person.
“For the first time in my life, I breathed for someone else. My heart pumped to fuel my body to make her day better. She gave the same in return.”
Just because they had such a strong, passionate love didn’t mean that love wouldn’t be tested. These two will DEFINITELY be tested, especially with the twists and turns I mentioned earlier. Secrets and betrayals will be revealed. This is where the different POVs work their magic. It is told through many years, not just the present. I absolutely fell in the love with the book and the characters. This is the first book I have read by Stephie Walls, but it definitely won’t be my last.

James unexpectedly receives the news that he has a child he knew nothing about and after that bombshell the story takes us back to the past and we start to find out James' history with his wife Cora and the events leading up to James shocking news.
I don't want to go into too many details about the story if I can help it as I really don't want to spoil it for anyone. I loved James from the start. He's pretty much the perfect man and that doesn't change throughout the story. Not once did I hate him even though he came across as a bit of a walk over at times, I still really liked him. I did struggle at first with Cora and I'm not sure why. I think maybe because we get everyone else's POV first it made me warm up to them quicker than I did with Cora but by the end I loved her.
This story spans years, from James and Cora meeting at school up to the present day. There's plenty of details and history to make you feel like you really know all the characters and there's plenty to keep you interested. You feel the same highs and lows that the characters do and i was desperate for James to get his HEA.
