Totally expected afghans
on 8 July 2012
I expected this to be a crochet take on Debbie New's fantastic Unexpected Knitting - it's not. I also expected that Robyn Chachula, as the author, would have produced most or all of the designs. She didn't.
What this is is a collection of, yes, very nice, afghans and cushion covers (Robyn Chacula designed the 4 cushions, other, well-known designers, contributed the 24 afghans) but there was nothing in the book that was Wow! What an unusual/interesting/different/startling technique/style/colour combination.
Debbie New's book had me thinking outside the box. This book doesn't go anywhere near doing that.
It's nice, there are nice designs, but the only "unexpected" element is that you expect the author on the cover (she's listed as author not editor) to have actually written the designs that the book contains, especially if you know and love her designs as I do. And for that reason, it's a disappointment. Which perhaps wouldn't have been the case if it was called "Assorted Afghans, edited by Robyn Chachula".
