How to use an underwater camera
Once you’ve chosen an underwater camera, there are a few basic principles of photography to follow in order to use it correctly. It’s helpful to try out your camera indoors, before you go underwater, to get the feel of features like macro mode and flash. Macro mode helps you focus on small objects you want a close-up photo of, but make sure you test the range and lighting with your macro mode before starting out. In most cases, once you’re underwater you’ll get the best results with your flash turned on - this adds colour to the photos. Ultimately though, the right mode and function will depend on your ultimate photography goals and the underwater lighting.
How to choose an underwater camera
• There are two main categories of underwater camera to choose from, including compact and DSLR. Both have their own pros and cons, but beginners usually choose a compact camera which is simpler to use.
• A compact underwater camera also offers additional advantages, such as its light weight and underwater video capabilities. However, it gives you less control over aperture and the image quality won’t be as strong as with a DSLR.
• More serious photographers may choose to invest in a DSLR underwater camera instead, which offers full framed shooting and greater control over shutter speeds, focus and ISO, as well as a larger sensor to work with.
