Product Description

Review

Essential reading for both students and practitioners of social work. The previous edition of this book was highly successful, and in this edition McLaughlin builds on that success to make the book a must have buy.
-Professor Richard Barker, Northumbria University

About the Author

My research interests cover participatory research, especially the involvement of service users in research, professional practice and the development of child care. My interests in professional practice include both the preparation of students for practice and how best to support social workers once in practice and to contribute to evidence informed practice particularly in the area of child care.

As the academic reviewer in the description above suggests this is an "introductory textbook". For me doing an MA in social work this book really doesn't cut the mustard in terms research texts. This book is not meant to be a "how to do social work research guide." It is more about dealing with "why research is important in practice." The important part of the title is "Understanding" - note it does not say "doing". I think due to it's title people could expect a lot more from this book and I doubt it will deliver.

If you want a research text I would suggest you consider broader social research texts like Bryman or Somekh and Lewin. I would not recommend this book to social work students on a BA or MA course.

This is not a bad textbook, indeed it is an interesting read in large sections. However the problem is that it is NOT A BOOK THAT WILL HELP A STUDENT TO COMPLETE A DISSERTATION AS THE TITLE SUGGESTS! 'Debates within social work research' or something similar would have been a more appropriate title. Why are there so many discursive books on social work research?
