About the Author

Chris Rogers is an award-winning television journalist and producer (he recently picked up the Amnesty International Media Award, and also won the One World Award for his investigations into Romanian child care), and his film on the treatment of Palestinian children by both the Israelis and the Palestinians won the Royal Television Society Award for Programme of the Year. He has posed as a human trafficker for an undercover investigation into East European sex traffickers for News at Ten, and his journey to Romania and Turkey to expose the shocking conditions inside state-run institutions, using hidden cameras, resulted in both a superb programme and this book. Marshall Corwin is an Emmy award-winning BBC TV series producer, with twenty years experience of filming documentaries across the world. Specialising in children's issues, science, conservation and adventure, he has made films in many extreme and dangerous environments. He has won fifteen major awards, and spent ten years in BBC Radio before moving to BBC TV, where he created the Serious Adventure, in which a team of teenagers go to extremes to help the planet, taking on environmental projects in some of the world's toughest places.. He is also the author of Serious Survival and co-wrote The Newsround Book of Space, and both were short-listed for the Royal Society Junior Science Books Prize.

A very powerful and hope-filled read. There is so much pain and suffering, and yet just a few people are gradually making a great difference to many peoples lives, now and for succeeding generations.

I bought this book because I have always found Chris Rogers to be a great journalist. I was profoundly shocked and deeply troubled by the sheer scope of human suffering uncovered by Mr. Rogers in this book. It is a rollercoaster ride of sensational highs and gut-wrenching lows as Mr. Rogers exposes a terrible cycle of neglect and abuse suffered by many in institutionalized care in Romania and Turkey. I found myself inspired by the audacity of Mr. Rogers and his team to make so many undercover journeys to these bleak institutions in order to tell such an important story. Even in the face of threats and intimidation, Mr. Rogers and his team paint a picture of both the best and worst of humanity: those trying to improve the lives of others and those antagonistic to anything that hinders their own agenda. This book is a snapshot of what can be achieved for the greater public good by solid, forthright journalism. I highly recommend this book.

I enjoyed this book highly. I saw the documentary and it was so sad to watch those children suffering. I hope that things change for the orphanages .
