The title of this book just screamed out to me! I’m 3/8 Italian and I used to spend two weeks in wonderful Tuscany every year when I was a child. Naturally, I was really excited about this book.
When Olivia Montague steps of the plane in Tuscany, I felt at home from the start. Of course that’s also thanks to Karen Aldous and her lovely description of the scenery, I fell in love with the area all over again.
Let go back to the start though: When Olivia’s grandmother dies she is devastated. She wants to change something in her life, so she breaks up with her current boyfriend and goes to see her Nonna’s home in Tuscany. She spends time at her grandmother’s house and discovers a lot about her family. She believes, she was abandoned by her parents as a child and now learns the truth, it’s a big shock to her! She actually has more family in beautiful Tuscany.
On the flight down she meets Alberto and the like each other from the start. However, there is also the antiques dealer Hugh St. James. Both men are really handsome and Olivia is very confused. That’s actually the part of the book I didn’t really like. I felt like her feelings developed way to quickly, in a non authentic way and also her relationship with both men didn’t develop in the right pace. That disturbed me a bit, because I actually really liked Olivia as a character.
She is full of passion and love and I loved following her around. She was finally able to discover the truth about her past and her family and that was very fascinating and interesting. Karen Aldous captured that tension beautifully, I was hooked!
The book has great messages about second chances, family and love and the were all wonderfully integrated in this storyline. This is a great summer book and I enjoyed every second of this story!
In Under A Tuscan Sky by Karen Aldous, readers are introduced to Olivia Montague. It soon becomes clear that Olivia struggles with a few issues, mostly concerning her belief in herself. These issues appear to stem from her childhood, a childhood in which Olivia was left behind by her parents and brought up by her grandparents instead. These abandonment issues that have leaked into Olivia's life as an adult are tough to deal with and seem to rear their head constantly, especially when it comes to her own relationships. Spurred on by an old photograph she finds of her Nonna and Nonno, in which the fact that they are hopelessly in love with each other is evident in every inch of the image, Olivia takes a trip to the place where they lived, to the gorgeous villa in which a million secrets lie...
Of course, it is not all plain-sailing once Olivia arrives there, leaving her ex-boyfriend Will behind, as well as best-friend Chiara, who isn't quite sure of what to make of Olivia's new-found confidence and lust for life and adventure. Once there, Olivia takes on the tasks of clearing the villa of her grandparents' belongings, in order for the place to be sold. It is while doing so that Olivia accidentally stumbles upon something that turns her life upside down, and now, on top of clearing the villa, she has another task on her hands. Everything that Olivia thought she knew about herself no longer stands, and the trip to Tuscany swiftly turns into something a lot more challenging than clearing old rooms and letting go of old ghosts.
What I adored most about this novel was the reoccurring theme of self-discovery. In order to find out the truth behind the mystery of Olivia's upbringing, she must shake off the person she was previously and be braver than she has ever been before, which is tough for someone like her to do. As a character, Olivia Montague was far from perfect but this only made her feel all the more relatable. I loved how real and flawed she was, and how desperate she was as a person to know more about herself, to figure out exactly where she came from and what happened when she was born. She's spent a large chunk of her life battling her inner-demons, which really broadened her character in my opinion. The romance, too, was absolutely heart-warming within this novel and I really did wonder what decision Olivia would make in the end, concerning her love life. Both men, Hugh and Alberto, charmed myself and Olivia numerous times throughout, and so I couldn't quite decide between them.
All in all, Under A Tuscan Sky by Karen Aldous was an uplifting story of hope, self-discovery and love, set amid the stunning Italian vineries and hills, which lifted my soul immeasurably and left me feeling wrapped up in a warm summer glow. With thanks to the publisher for the review copy of this book.
