Let's be clear: UMW is a work of high genius. An epic poem that fits inside a small village in Wales. The language - in every line - sings like honeycoated razorblades; there's nothing more entertaining and nothing more Welsh. Even more surprising given Thomas wrote in English.

To get specific, this new Kindle edition (with the spotty cover) is an improvement on previous. Some typos have been corrected and formatting works well; it's readable without noticing paper versions came first.

Also, the cues of the radio play version Thomas left at his death (you'll often see "Narrator's voice" cued in the text) have been removed, turning it into a proper epic poem rather than a script. (It seems to be the full version of the play, not the shortened versions often broadcast.)

There's also a good introduction that places the "play for voices" in context with other work Dylan was doing at the time, and the immense influence writing for radio had.

So - if you don't own a copy, this edition of the Welsh "Ulyssees" works very well. £4 well spent.

Even in the revised version, this book contains a hugely enjoyable and richly imagined text. I purchased this hardback edition to replace my old paperback (1962) and found several alterations to the original text. The most obvious was that in places the two narrative voices had been combined into one and printed in the form of an italicized paragraph that I occasionally found hard to read. But it could be because, like Mary Ann Sailors, I know exactly how old I have become! However, the format does not detract from the wonderful collection of quirky, funny and tragic characters, wakening from their dreams to live out the minutiae of their lives through the duration of one day in a Welsh seaside town. An extraordinary piece of innovative writing in its time, this work has deservedly become a modern classic.

It is a book that I need to read again. Spookily I could hear Richard Burton's voice in my head while I was reading some passages but it is a book/play that needs to be heard read out aloud therefore I lost so much of the joy of the words reading silently.

If you are reading this then you probably already know how good this is. This is THE definitive version of this epic Welsh work, bringing together Thomas' amazing word-play with Burton's sonorous voice. It is perfectly produced and makes a very good present for anyone who appreciates one of the finest works in the English language.

It comes on 2 CDs, but it ripped very easily to MP3 and I put the discs away in a safe place. There were a few background notes on the insert, but who needs to read notes when you can just close your eyes and let the words wash over you?

This recording is so entertaining, mainly down to good timing and audience reaction, I wouldn't let the coughs and crackles on the recording bother you (its old!), you soon forget them as you feel you are amongst the audience. I have the BBC version of the play as well, which is excellently read and produced, but I laugh much more when I play this one :)

I first read this book when I was 15, some 26 years ago, the magic it invoked then is still there when I read it now. Each character is memorable and the descriptions and actions they portray feel realistic.

A pleasure to have read it again.

Just stunning. Hope I'm not the only one that has to read this out loud? Don't listen to Richard Burton performing this before you give it a go yourself, he's too portentous. This took Dylan years to write and went through innumerable iterations and his efforts show in wonderfully precise cadence. Spoken music and unforgettable characters.

It goes to show that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This "play" was not my cup of tea as a reading exercise. Undoubtedly, it would be fun to see on the stage, however, as a means of détente it does not hit the spot.
