Product Description

Review

'These pages abound in insight and wisdom... a book of real interest and value. At a time when it is all too easy to see belief as a sinisterly eccentric oddity or a childish incapacity for real thought, Ward stakes a bold and persuasive claim for its centrality to any and every intellectual exercise.' --Rowan Williams, The Tablet

'subtle and wide-ranging... richly discursive on life, literature and art' --Iain McGilchrist, LA Review of Books

About the Author

Graham Ward is Regius Professor of Divinity in the University of Oxford. His books include Barth, Derrida and the Language of Theology, Radical Orthodoxy: A New Theology (edited with John Milbank and Catherine Pickstock), Cities of God, The Certeau Reader, Cultural Transformation and Religious Practice, True Religion, Christ and Culture and Religion and Political Thought.

Not an easy book nor in any way a 'light read', (though very well and clearly written), but one of the most significant and enlightening books I have ever read. The range and penetration of Ward's synthesis are remarkable and he goes along way to repressing the imbalance between reason and intuition which has plagued Western culture since the Ancient Greeks. A remarkable achievement.

Great story to start the book - then it took some interesting twists and turns. The basic argument is that as humans we are made to 'believe'.

This arrived promptly, I have only just started reading it so cannot comment on the contents yet, however, a fascinating first chapter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beyond the fluff of popular treatments of "Worldviews" 18 May 2015
By Troy Hammond - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
Excellent interdisciplinary investigation of the etiology and teleology of belief, especially in the face of its scientistic detractors who would relegate this and other qualia of life to epiphenomena of mere material interactions. Ward, an academic theologian, shows great patience in his progress and restraint in his conclusions drawn from an impressive survey of ancient and modern philosophical and scientific sources.

The cover is a bit kitschy, but don't let that fool you. The content iconically embodies the correlative tensions that bind erudition to everyday life, masterfully weaving together disparate threads into a coherent investigation. If less encumbered by the critical apparatus of Ward's other works (e.g. Certeau Reader, Cities of God, Cultural Transformation and Religious Practice, Politics of Discipleship), the work still demands a willingness to track with disciplines undoubtedly beyond the expertise of any given reader.
