5.0 out of 5 stars 3rd Of 3 Volumes In The Series Covering Una Mae Carlisle - One Of Great Unsung Jazz Vocalists 8 Dec. 2015
By George O'Leary - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Chronological Classics CDs were a concept of Gilles Pétard of France who set out in 1989 to ambitiously re-release as many of the 78-rpm Jazz/Big Band (Swing) selections as he could, each with detailed and informative inserts. The first volume was Ella Fitzgerald 1935-1937 and, after producing close to 1,000 CDs, the series ceased operations in 2004 after filing for bankruptcy. By that time Pétard had started on some of the earliest 45-rpm/33 1/3-rpm discs, while encompassing many of the top R&B artists of the time. Some artists covered in his massive series warranted more than one volume, and one such was Jazz vocalist, pianist and song-writer Una Mae Carlisle who came into this world in Xenia, Ohio the day after Christmas in 1915. In her case the 3 volumes cover her work from 1938-1941, 1941-1944 ande 1944-1950.

While still in her teens she was already performing on Cincinnati radio, as well as at venues throughout the state, and it was then that she was discovered by the legendary Fats Waller, whose own boogie woogie stride style and humourous patter at the keyboard hugely influenced the young lady. In the late 1930s she toured Europe and also cut some records with Fats, doing the vocals on his 1939 rendition of I Can't Give You Anything But Love (Baby).

Starting in 1940 she cut around 12 records for the Bluebird label, including her only hit, Walking By The River (which she wrote), taking it to # 14 in May 1941 as Bluebird 11033 b/w I Met You Then, I Know You Now. Both those sides are in the 1938-1941 volume along with some of the other Bluebird cuts, all with quite decent sound quality. On both those sides the band accompanying her included trumpeter Benny Carter, bass Slam Stewart (of Sam & Slam fame), and drummer Zutty Singleton. Others she worked with there include jazz pianist John Kirby and tenor saxophonist/clarinetist Lester Young.

After departing Bluebird in late 1941 she established a partnership with Joe Davis, a Jazz, R&B and Pop music producer, publisher and promoter who also exerted a great deal of influence on Fats himself, and Davis would arrange later recordings with the likes of Budd Johnson, Shadow Wilson and Ray Nance. Some of her compositions would also make their way into the repertoires of greats like Cab Calloway and Peggy Lee. In the 1950s, she did some recording at Columbia with Don Redman before a lingering illness forced her into retirement.

Who knows how far she might have gone - she was that good - had the fickle finger of fate not stepped in and taken her from us at age 41 on November 7, 1956 in New York City. As I said, if you want to sample one of the great and largely unsung vocalists of Jazz, any one of the 3 volumes in this series comes highly recommended.
