I have to start off by saying at the time of writing this review, we are enjoying a hot dry Summer, so I can at this point in time not verify the effectiveness of the suit in keeping out the wet. However the weather forecast is predicting rain sooner rather than later so I will provide that update a little later on.
Now to tell you about everything else about this Rain Suit.
The suit was packaged as a MEDIUM but the labels on the garment most definitely say it is a LARGE size!
It is quite weighty and has a real quality feel about it. It is a good dense black and has a subtle sheen to the fabric.
The TROUSERS have a 1¼ inch wide elasticated waistband, complete with an inner draw elastic for finer comfort adjustment. There is full lining to the trousers with a mesh from waist to thigh and then the rest of the leg has a normal polyester taffeta type lining. There is a Velcro tab at the hem to provide a close fit at the ankles. There are two useful side seam pockets which are nice and deep and are zipped for security/to keep the weather out. A useful hanging loop is provided on the back waist of the trousers. Measurements:- The Inner Leg Length is 31½ inches The width across the thigh area from inner to outer seam is 12½ inches The width across the bottom of the trousers leg from side seam to inner leg seam is 10 inches The waist across from side seam to side seam (un-stretched) is 16½ inches
The JACKET is nicely styled with princess line front seaming and a slightly lower back edge that is gently curved. The seaming at the back is princess line too with a short line of graduating hexagons to decorate each side. The zip front has a storm flap with Velcro closure finished with a popper closure at the hem and a double popper closure at the neckline. At the inner neckline, the storm flap has nice soft lining so as to be gentle on the skin. The hood is all part of the jacket and is not detachable, so there is no danger once the hood is up over the head, of any water dripping or running down your neck. The hood has two areas of drawstring adjustment for a good fit - one around the front edge and one at the back of the hood. The jacket is fully lined with the main part of the body being of breathable mesh and the lower area being of a silky polyester. The hood area is lined with the breathable mesh. There is an inner drawstring adjustment to the hem of the jacket to create a more snug fit. The sleeves are raglan style, thus making the jacket comfortable to wear over thicker tops in the winter time. A short line of graduated hexagons adorn the front of the jacket by the raglan seaming and the sleeve cuffs are elasticated with additional adjustment in the form of Velcro tabs. Two deep front pockets are situated in the princess line seaming which have tabbed zips and storm flaps. It really is a nicely styled jacket.
Now for some measurements for you:- Width side seam to side seam under the arms is 24½ inches Width of the bottom hem from side to side is 25½ inches Length from back neck to hem is 29 inches From under arm to cuff the sleeve measures 21½ inches
All in all this is a very useful Rain Suit whether walking the kids to school, cycling, out rambling or dog walking as well as jogging or running to keep fit. It would be useful for the lady golfer too.
As mentioned earlier I will have to report back as to how waterproof the suit is. Not only is the weather warm and dry at time of the review, but the swing tag on the product says it is 'wind and water resistant' but on the manufacturer's sewn in label on the jacket, it states the garment is 'waterproof, breathable and windproof'.
I wear size 16 jeans and the trousers fitted over them very comfortably.
I would say that this Rain Suit is a handy addition to any wardrobe
UPDATE - 3 Nov 2014 YES!! This suit is most definitely waterproof and windproof. We have had rain recently and the temperature has been much cooler than of late. The Jacket, just over a normal long sleeved cotton T-Shirt type top was nice and warm for dog walking. I was warm without being sticky or uncomfortable.
As we are having a lot more rain now this suit is getting a lot more use, especially for dog walking. I have found 1 disadvantage. Whilst there are 2 nicely zipped pockets in the outside of the jacket, it is a shame that there is not an inner pocket. I like to keep my mobile in an inner pocket and leave the outer ones for keys, dog poo bags, dog treats, tissues.
Another use for the trousers is to pop on when using the pressure washer! I always manage to get the legs of my jeans soaked!!
The first thing I noticed about this set was that the sizing seemed very odd. The jacket was not what I would class as a size Small, despite being labelled as such. Trying it on as a size 10, and wearing a thick jumper, I would expect a Small jacket to fit fine, but this absolutely swamped me. The arms especially were huge, long and puffy. I think this would fit a size 14 without any problem, and if you are a size 10 or less then you would be better looking at the Xtra Small for a jacket. By contrast, the trousers were a reasonable size, and fitted ok when worn over the top of other trousers as an extra waterproof layer - to cover up jeans or leggings for example. When worn alone though, the trousers were also a little big, though not so much as the jacket.
I am also not sure that black was the smartest colour to produce a waterproof set in, as if you are walking in rainy conditions then brighter colours would keep you safer on roads etc. I would suggest sewing on a light reflecting safety strip.
As for the quality of the items, I found it to be fairly average. The material is very rustly and seems quite thin. I didn't find the fabric particularly soft on the skin, but then I would generally not wear these next to the skin anyway. The items appeared to be water tight, and the adjustable cuffs also help to ensure that you don't get wet. There is, however, a noticeable difference between the flimsy-feeling fabric of this waterproof jacket, and the previous waterproof jackets I've owned by companies like Sprayway and North Face. If you wait until the sales you could acquire a jacket and trousers from one of these brands for a similar price as this set, and that would be a much better option in my opinion. However, if you're looking for a quick, functional purchase then this will do, or if you are looking for a very lightweight option then this will also serve you well.
This suit is light weight and comfortable to wear but still offers very good protection from the wind and light showers (I've not tested it in torrential rain yet but I think it will work well in all but the heaviest rain). It folds up fairy small making it great to carry in a back pack on long walks in case the weather changes at short notice.
I agree with the other reviewer that perhaps it would be safer in a brighter colour (or even with reflective strips), especially if you are walking near traffic at night, but that is something you can add yourself and I knew what colour it was when I requested it for review.
This will be a must pack item for me when I'm going camping, it won't take up as much room as a heavy coat but will offer protection against the elements. Combining the waterproof trousers with boots or wellies will also make it perfect for walking through damp long grass.
Good for jogging in, hurrying up the street on a blustery day, or even hillwalking. This suit will keep you dry yet cool as the breathable material allows fresh air in, keeping the sweat at bay. Not sure that black is the best color, perhaps something a bit more sporty, but a faultless purchase.
