From purchase the main flaw in the design of this stepper has been the adjustable tension, during a workout, the dial which adjusts tension loosens and it decreases to the point where exercise levels significantly suffer. The other flaw in the design being in the way the ropes attach to the stepper itself, as you use them to train there is a natural amount of friction which loosens the fasteners resulting in them flying off and potentially losing balance, there is also the possibility of the metal end striking something in the room.
The overall build quality of the stepper is what brought it to the end of its life. There are two metal pieces at the front which hang down holding the braided metal rope which provides tension to the apparatus. The metal is of such cheap construction that it tore making the stepper unusable.
If you look on Amazon you will see designs which differ from this model, I would suggest looking at those alternatives first.
Hope this helps.
Only slight criticsm is that the step depth isn't huge - but this isn't a major problem. I tend to use the stepper when I don't have time for a run, 15 minutes burns around 150 calories and doesn't me get sweaty - so I can use it without needing a full shower. Its operation is FAR quieter than a previous model I owned - so overall happy with the product.
They asked for several photgraphs which I supplied, asked me numerous questions over and over and then decided they would not help.
very very unhelpful and did not care at all,
I would never recommend buying ANYTHING from this company
It goes up and down, it does I guess what it says it should do, but yes, it leaks grease, the pistons aren't the best quality, as they get hot through use, the grease softens and leaks from poor quality seals, stick it in an old towel it's fine, just deal with it or join David Lloyd.
Occasionally the steel rope pulley jumps it's groove, it's a pain in the backside to put it back, but it does go. Just don't operate it with both pedals on same plane and it will be fine.
As a plus point, and I'm not joking here, my girlfriend uses it daily, every day for at least 1 hour ! and has done for a year, we worked out its done around 4million steps, yep, that's correct, 4 million.
It is what it is, but is it worth £40, absolutely, go for it, just don't be so hard in something that's not actually designed for what we've put it through. After 4 million steps, today it gave up the fight and she broke the pulley tensioner. It sheared clean off.
Will I complain, nope, it's done more than it was designed for.
Good product, don't be too hard on it for what it is :-)
It's small enough to shove under a bed or sofa that has a good gap between the floor and the underside of the item of furniture. It's compact as far as gym equipment goes but it's size effects it's usefulness for what it was originally intended. The stepper simulates taking steps with out the hassle of leaving your home or using a stair case. The depth of each step however is very shallow and gives a very abnormal result. This strains my ankles as I continuously make these tiny repetitive movements. Despite each step being shallow each foot plate will impact the supporting bar beneath.
After 15 minutes I don't feel like I've had anything of a work out at all but my ankles are killing me. My ankles aren't the part of me that needs the work out. I have had a much better workout from a dvd in ten minutes than using this machine.
Maybe for a quite small or light individual who is housebound and still has strong leg muscles and ankles this might be okay. Any one else I wouldn't recommend it. I will be sending back and possibly getting an actual step instead.

Only criticism is that the wheel does often squeak... Which is fairly annoying.
Build quality seems good enough though.
