However, this, when it came, was a severe disappointment. To begin with, the first episode sees the death of three main characters, and the transfer of another to a different regiment. Essentially, ITV could not get all the actors back in time for filming, but really, is that any reason to completely write off a superb cast? So, the series commences with only two members of the original Red Troop left, one being Henno Garvie, who, although quite amusing, simply does not have enough charisma to carry the show, and the other being a relatively new trooper, who only became a member part way through serie 2. Essentially, it all goes down hill from there. The new characters simply cannot take the place of the old ones - it is almost like watching a completely different show - and the storylines, now that ex-SAS man Chris Ryan no longer advised on the scripts, border on the dramatically unrealistic. Series 4, really is no better. My advice? Buy the first two series - they are excellant - and then forget that series 3 and 4 were ever made. I prefer to think that there were only ever two series of Ultimate Force.
1) In the very first episode, the SAS (essentially the British Army special forces) are sent to defeat some bank robbers. Essentially, the authorities send an elite military unit to do the work of a police armed response team. This is something that would absolutely never happen. Ever.
2) In the same episode, said SAS team - with their training, experience and military-grade weaponry and equipment - manage to lose a man (who is shot by a bank robber).
3) Further episodes portray equally absurd situations and scenarios. Characters are wholly of the one or two dimensional variety. Most follow quite cliched macho soldier stereotypes. They do not develop at all and the performances of the actors are average at best.
4) Ross Kemp is in every episode.
Not really one to recommend to fans of decent television.
The focus seems to shift in Series 3-4 from showing SAS style operations, to putting down other nations Special Operations Forces. There is an episode that makes the Soviet Spetznas look stupid as they run head first into machine gun fire. Another episode makes the entire Colombian military look completely incompetent and probably the worst offender an entire episode making the US Green Berets look racist, ignorant and incompetent. The most hilarious part about that, is that the US Green Berets primary mission is to work with indigenous people from all over the world. Not only would a racist probably not want that job, the organization would have absolutely no tolerance for an operator like that. I also know for a fact that while there is friendly rivalry with all in the special ops community, it is in fact, a friendly and healthy competitiveness to keep them all as sharp as possible.
That's really just the worst in a long list of complaints, but the last half of the shows run is merely a shadow of it's former self.
Very disappointed with this series. The lengths the series creators go to assuage their white male guilt and bow to the keepers of political correctness make the series more Sci-Fi / Fantasy than Action Adventure.
Granted this is entertainment and not a documentary, -but- it would be nice to at least abide by some of the boundaries of reality.
I saw that "Chris Ryan" a.k.a. The one that got away has his name attached to the series, he plainly should have kept away from this one.
*Caution* If you don't possess the intestinal fortitude of a Billy goat, this series may induce forceful and very painful vomiting. Avoid !
