This is a Class A package of that which you and I may call "our kind of music", if your kind of music happens to be pure cheese. The Eurovision Song Contest is an annual tribute to cheese, and there is enough of the stuff here to put France out of business. If you are a Eurovision person, or if you are in general a consumer of unquestionably naff but enjoyable music then this is for you. As I gather this is a British product, there is obviously a slant towards the contributions made by the UK - although no half-decent Eurovision compilation would in any case be complete without Bucks Fizz - but the rest of the Eurovision community is well represented, including Israel's Milk and Honey with "Hallelujah", Celine Dion with Switzerland's 1988 power-ballad winner "Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi", the very un-Dutch sounding Mouth and MacNeal and their 1974 terrace-anthem-soundalike "I See A Star", some of the numerous Irish winners including Mr Eurovision himself, Johnny Logan, and a bunch of Swedes called ABBA. It isn't all cheese; there are some quite classy tunes on offer, including "Un Banc, Un Arbre, Une Rue" - Monaco's only Eurovision winner, from 1971 - "Love Enough For Two" by Prima Donna (a solid British entry in 1980) and, indeed, the perfectly respectable contributions of Mr Logan. But we go right off the Camembert scale with Teach-In, and "Ding-A-Dong". If you want a song that defines Eurovision, it's that one. If Eurovision is your thing, then you will love it. If Eurovision isn't your thing, then what the hell are you looking at this for?
The British selection include runners-up and near-misses as well as the winners, so along with your Bucks Fizzes and Sandie Shaws you have Clodagh Rodgers, Lyndsey De Paul & Mike Moran, The New Seekers and Bardo - whose "One Step Further", in my opinion, is one of the best British entries (despite finishing seventh in 1982).
But seriously - "Ding-A-Dong". Play it loud on your car stereo while cruising along on a bright summer's day. You'll want to bottle those few minutes and open them again whenever you feel down.
Another review noted the absence of "Knock, Knock, Who's There?" by Mary Hopkin, and I would go on to add "One Step Out Of Time", which was Michael Ball's fine effort from 1992. In fact, this could easily have been a three or even four-CD compilation. But, such as it is, this is well worth a listen, even if it does include the abysmal "Teenage Life", by Daz Sampson - a painful contrast to Britain's past achievements, and a hint that we should call it a day. Either that or recall the Brotherhood of Man (my aunt had a weird crush on the one with the moustache).

I was really pleased to received this used CD but did wonder what it would be like. However, it is perfect and so happy I went for this (cheaper) version rather than brand new. I will do that again.

Eurovision is a bit of a laugh and not to be taken too seriously but this CD has some entertaining songs on it and I am pleased with it. I'm not a big Eurovision fan but just enjoy good tunes

I bought this CD thinking it was a new line of CDs produced by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to help commemorate the Longest Running Music Contest in the World!
But upon playing it and looking at the track listing, I found it wasn't very representative of all the participants throughout the entire Eurovision Contest, there have been a massive 46 countries participating across the current 52 years from one times including Morroco and Eternal Participants such as France and the UK.
But in the track-listings of the 42 songs on the double album, a massive 20 of the tracks are UK entries and to think we have only officialy won 5 times and Ireland 7 times it's very disconcerting.
So in my confusion over the overt bias to the UK I contacted Mr Svante Stockselius (Current EBU head of the Eurovision Song Contest) asking if it was official and whether there were other CDs in the various other EBU Member States with similar bias, and here was my response:
"This is not an official CD released by the EBU. It is only intended for the UK market.
The EBU only release one official CD in connection to the ESC each year, that is the official complation album with all the participating songs.
Best regards
Svante Stockselius
ESC Executive Supervisor"
But back to the CD itself, please note that not all songs on the CD are recorded as performed in the ESC, for example for Track 5 of CD 2 - Dana International "Diva" it is sung in English on the CD when on the ESC it was sung in her native Hebrew.
So other than that, it's fine...
Positives:
Able to listen to songs that weren't previously released on EBU CDs
Negitives:
Portrays itself to be a official EBU album with use of ESC Trademarks, and it doesn't even state anywhere on CD or cover that it's not official.

This is a brilliant set of classic Eurovision "hits"! If you are a true fan of this mad annual event as I am, then you can't NOT be delighted with what's on this compilation. Our 3 and half year old daughter absolutely adores Bardo's One Step Further, Lulu's Boom Bang a Bang and Gina Gee's Just a Little Bit as well as a few others and it's now got to the stage where we can't get travel in our car without putting the cd on! It's nostalgia at its best and worth every penny! If you want to smile, laugh and sing your head off, buy this cd and enjoy! You'll forget all your worries and agree that life really is too short!!

Eat food from other countries and pretend you like it, dress up in national costumes that make you like a standard lamp and pretend to understand what the Slovenians are actually trying to sing about.....and play this! Yep - its Eurovision party time....you know it! This delivers...it is basically what's left after the really really awful garbage has been removed....priceless! Oh and remember to ask before you rip off your granny's skirt - just let her drink the bucks fizz rather than live it!!

If you like Eurovision, then this is pretty much the ultimate collection. The only disappointment is that Power to all our friends by Cliff Richard and Let me be the one by the Shadows are not on, but apart from those all the other best ones are on it.
